German signed a minor-league contract with the Pirates on Friday and was invited to major-league spring training, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Despite throwing the 24th perfect game in MLB history last season, German turned in only a 4.56 ERA and 1.08 WHIP across 108.2 innings for the Yankees. The right-hander will be given a chance to prove himself during the final weeks of spring training, and he will make $1.25 million this season if he makes the MLB roster. His new deal also includes a $2.25 million club option for 2025.

Yankees' Domingo German: Outrighted off 40-man roster

The Yankees outrighted German (personal) to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Thursday, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports.
German missed the final two months of the 2023 season after voluntarily submitting to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse in early August. The 31-year-old right-hander has now been removed from the 40-man roster in New York and can head into free agency if he passes through waivers unclaimed.
German was placed on the restricted list Wednesday after agreeing to voluntarily submit to inpatient treatment for alcohol abuse.
"It is critical that Domingo completely focuses on addressing his health and well-being," reads a statement from the Yankees. "We will respect his privacy as he begins this process." Nestor Cortes (shoulder) has cut short his minor-league rehab assignment and is presumably going to take over German's spot in the rotation beginning Saturday against the Astros. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said German will not return this season, per Andy Martino of SNY.tv.
German (arm) threw five scoreless innings out of the bullpen in Monday's 5-1 loss to the Rays. He gave up two hits and two walks and struck out four in a no-decision.
German was originally scheduled to start Monday, only for the Yankees to scratch him hours before the contest after manager Aaron Boone said the right-hander experienced discomfort in his armpit area Sunday. The Yankees planned to have him visit a doctor shortly before the game, and German was apparently given the green light to work out of the bullpen after starter Jhony Brito was lifted after giving up five runs in four innings. Based on how he fared in relief Monday, German looks to be fully healthy, so he should be ready to return to a traditional starting role when his next turn in the rotation comes up this weekend versus the Astros.

German was scratched from his start Monday against the Rays due to discomfort in his right armpit, but manager Aaron Boone said that he doesn't expect the 30-year-old to land on the 15-day injured list, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports.
German first experienced the discomfort Sunday and was unable to play catch, prompting the Yankees to call up Jhony Brito from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on short notice to make a spot start. The Yankees called up right-hander Jhony Brito from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to get the start Monday, but the team didn't place German on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. For now, German can be viewed as day-to-day until the Yankees provide updated information on both the nature and extent of his rotation. With Nestor Cortes (shoulder) on pace to return from the 60-day IL early next week, German already looked to be at risk of losing his spot in the rotation even before he was scratched from Monday's start. Since throwing a perfect game June 28 in Oakland, German has turned in a 5.64 ERA and 1.25 WHIP over his subsequent four starts.
German (5-7) took the loss Tuesday as the Yankees were downed 9-3 by the Mets, coughing up six runs on seven hits -- including three home runs -- and a walk over six innings. He struck out nine.
The right-hander had little trouble with most of the Mets' lineup, but Pete Alonso was his nemesis, launching homers off German in the third and sixth innings. On the bright side, he did strike out nine batters for the third straight outing, and German has a 1.25 WHIP and 32:7 K:BB through 22.1 innings over four July starts, albeit with a 5.64 ERA. He'll try to keep the ball in the yard in his next trip to the mound, which is likely to come at home early next week against the Rays.

German has struck out nine in three of his last four starts, but he was unable to contain the Angels' offense. Two of the four hits he allowed went for extra bases, and he also allowed a run to score on a wild pitch in this outing. The right-hander is now at a 4.52 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 101:31 K:BB through 97.2 innings through 18 starts this year. He's projected for a home start versus the Mets next week.
