  • Jarred Cosart: Elects free agency

Cosart (elbow) cleared waivers and elected to become a free agent Monday.

The Padres DFA'd the oft-injured pitcher earlier in the week, and Cosart decided to test the free agent market rather than stick around in San Diego's minor-league system. On top of his injury problems, the 27-year-old owns an unsightly 5.67 ERA, 1.79 WHIP and 53:58 K:BB over the past two seasons (81 innings), so he may have to start on a minor-league deal.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Moved to 60-day DL

Cosart (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Thursday.

The Padres needed to clear a 40-man roster spot for reliever Kyle McGrath to come up to the big leagues, and given that Cosart is out for the year, he was a logical choice to cast off the 40-man. He underwent elbow surgery on July 19 and will now focus on getting ready for the 2018 season.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Undergoes season-ending surgery

Cosart underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow this week and will be out for the remainder of the season, Dennis Lin of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Cosart had been rehabbing at the team's spring training complex after being diagnosed with a flexor strain, but the injury appears to have required more of a long-term solution. The righty, who missed the beginning of the season while sidelined with a hamstring injury, finishes the 2017 campaign with a 4.88 ERA over seven appearances (six starts) and an unattractive 15:19 K:BB ratio. He begins the long road to recovery, as Dinelson Lamet takes over his spot in the starting rotation.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Heading to extended ST for rehab

Cosart (elbow) received a PRP injection Wednesday and will head to extended spring training to begin his rehab process, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander's first potential return date was this Friday, but that clearly is not going to happen based on the news. Cosart was officially diagnosed with a flexor strain, so he will not begin throwing immediately upon his arrival in Arizona. This pushes his timeline well into the future, although no firm return date has been provided at this time. Look for Miguel Diaz and Dinelson Lamet to remain in the rotation while Cosart misses time.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Lands on DL with elbow injury

Cosart was placed on the 10-day disabled list Tuesday with a strained right elbow.

It's unclear when this injury cropped up, but it may go to explain why he struggled so much in his most recent start Sunday. The severity is also unknown at this point, although since the DL stint was backdated to Monday, he'll first be eligible to return June 16 when the Padres take on the Brewers. To fill his spot on the roster, Jose Pirela was brought up from Triple-A, but a starter will likely need to be brought up from the minors to make his next scheduled start this weekend in Kansas City.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Struggles in loss Sunday

Cosart (0-2) allowed six hits, three walks and three runs over four innings Sunday, striking out five in a 3-1 loss to the Rockies.

The 27-year-old limited the hard contact against a powerful Rockies lineup, but a parade of singles and walks ended his day before the fifth inning for the third consecutive start. Cosart's terrible control (0.8 K/BB) and inability to go deep into games has made him tough to tolerate even as a deep-league option. The righty draws a favorable matchup at home against the Royals next Saturday, but it would be tough to recommend him as a safe option.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Fails to make it past fourth inning

Cosart allowed two runs on three hits while walking five and striking out two over four innings for a no-decision in Monday's 5-2 win over the Cubs.

Cosart was making his first start since taking a liner off his foot May 18, so the Padres weren't pushing him in the 87-pitch outing. Regardless, the 27-year-old right-hander has pitched into the fifth inning just once in his five starts and sports a weak 4.5 K/9, ugly 7.2 BB/9 and shaky 4.50 ERA in 20 innings. Cosart would likely be in the bullpen or in the minors in most organizations.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Confirmed for Monday's start

Cosart (foot) was confirmed as the starting pitcher for Monday's game against the Cubs, Bob Scanlan of Fox Sports San Diego reports.

As expected, Cosart will make his scheduled start against the Cubs after taking a liner off his foot during his last start. He'll look to bounce back from that last outing, which saw him allow four runs in just 2.2 innings before being pulled. The 26-year-old has compiled a 3.52 ERA in his four starts (15.1 innings).

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: X-rays on foot come back clean

Cosart is day-to-day after X-rays on his foot came back negative Wednesday, Dennis Lin of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Cosart took a liner off his right foot in the second inning Wednesday, and while he was in noticeable pain, the 26-year-old was able to stay in the game. He allowed four runs on four hits and four walks before being pulled just 2.2 innings into the game. It's unclear if Cosart will be able to make his next scheduled start Monday against the Cubs, but that should become clearer in the coming days based on how his foot feels.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Sharp in spot start Thursday

Cosart allowed one run on five hits and a walk over five innings Thursday against Milwaukee. He struck out three and received a no-decision.

It was a good outing for Cosart, who was just activated from the disabled list on Sunday to make his third start of the season. Although he only lasted 72 pitches, the 26-year-old worked effectively with a sharp curveball throughout the contest and cooled down a hot Milwaukee offense. Cosart showcased a shortened delivery that seemed to have the Brewers' bats off-balance from the outset. He figuers to take another turn in the rotation in place of Trevor Cahill (shoulder) on Wednesday.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Confirmed as Thursday's starter

Manager Andy Green confirmed Cosart will start Thursday's game against the Brewers.

Cosart will get the nod Thursday in place of Trevor Cahill, who was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a shoulder strain Wednesday. He's already tossed a pair of games for the Padres this season, allowing three runs (one earned) with a 4:3 K:BB through 7.2 innings of work. He'll line up against Zach Davies and the hot-hitting Brewers.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Option for Thursday spot start

Cosart could make a spot start Thursday against the Brewers in place of Trevor Cahill (shoulder), AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Cosart has already made two starts this season, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits while posting a 4:3 K:BB in 7.2 innings pitched. He's certainly well-rested given that he hasn't made a major-league appearance since mid-April, so he seems like a logical option to fill the void until Cahill is healthy again. If this comes to fruition, Cosart would line up against Milwaukee right-hander Zach Davies.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Activated from disabled list Sunday

Cosart (hamstring) was activated from the 10-day disabled list Sunday.

Cosart was placed on the disabled list April 19 after straining his hamstring during his preceding start. The 26-year-old allowed one earned run over six innings of rehab work between High-A Lake Elsinore and Triple-A El Paso over the past couple of weeks. Manager Andy Green recently hinted that Cosart will likely operate in a long relief role upon his return from the DL, so expect to see him working out of the bullpen for the time being.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Will make another rehab appearance

Cosart (hamstring) made his first rehab appearance for High-A Lake Elsinore this week, but he will require another rehab outing before being activated off the disabled list, Dennis Lin of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The 26-year-old needed 43 pitches to get through two innings Tuesday, but the Padres would like to see better results before bringing him back to majors. Manager Andy Green referenced "long work" when talking about Cosart's eventual reinstatement from the disabled list, hinting that the righty will be used in relief upon his return.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: To make rehab start Tuesday

Cosart (hamstring) is scheduled to make a rehab start with High-A Lake Elsinore on Tuesday, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Cosart was placed on the 10-day disabled list on April 19 after straining his right hamstring during a start the day before. He was able to throw a bullpen session this weekend, and if his rehab start goes well, it sounds like the 26-year-old should rejoin the Padres in the coming week or two.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Scheduled for bullpen session

Cosart (hamstring) is expected to throw a bullpen session this weekend in San Francisco, Dennis Lin of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The Padres will decide whether Cosart is ready to return from the DL after the session, so it will be a telltale weekend for the right-hander. If all goes well, he could retake his place in the rotation during next week's home stand, but could also find himself relegated to a bullpen role if Luis Perdomo is judged to be the stronger option.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Heads to DL

Cosart was placed on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Cosart left his start Tuesday in the fourth inning with the ailment, and he'll apparently need some time on the DL to let it properly heal. Kevin Quackenbush was recalled to fill his roster spot, though it's unclear who the Padres will turn to if they need a temporary fifth starter.

  • Padres' Jarred Cosart: Strains hamstring during start

Cosart, who exited Tuesday's game against the Diamondbacks in the fourth inning, was diagnosed with a right hamstring strain, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Cosart exited Tuesday's game after walking in a run during the top of the fourth inning. In 3.2 innings pitched, the righty allowed three runs (one earned) on two hits and two walks before being relieved by Craig Stammen. The severity of Cosart's hamstring strain is still unclear, so he'll be considered day-to-day until more details become available.
