Chris Marrero: Headed to Japan
Marrero signed a contract with the Orix Buffaloes of Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan, Jon Heyman of FanRagSports.com reports.
Marrero struggled during his time with the Giants, so rather than head to the minors to act as organizational depth, he'll head overseas to try to revive his career that way. The details of his contract are unknown at this time, but more likely than not, Marrero will try to return stateside in the next year or two.

Giants' Chris Marrero: Sent outright to Triple-A
Marrero cleared waivers Thursday and was outrighted to Triple-A Sacramento.
Marrero was sent back to the minors earlier in the week after batting just .132 to start the season. He'll likely serve as an organizational depth piece unless he demolishes Triple-A pitching like he did last season in the Red Sox organization.

Giants' Chris Marrero: DFA'd Monday
Marrero was designated for assignment by the Giants on Monday, John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
The move was made to clear room for Drew Stubbs, whose contract was purchased from Triple-A on Monday. Marrero was struggling to start the year, slashing just .132/.171/.211 through 38 at-bats (15 games), prompting the Giants to seek an offensive upgrade in the outfield. It's unclear whether he'll accept his assignment to the minors in the event that he clears waivers.

Giants' Chris Marrero: Out of lineup Sunday
Marrero is out of the lineup Sunday against the Rockies, Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News reports.
Despite the Rockies bringing a left-hander to the hill in Kyle Freeland, Marrero will find himself out of the lineup as the Giants look to extract more offense by using Brandon Belt in left field. Marrero still looks like the team's primary option in left field, but his .135/.175/.216 batting line over 40 plate appearances this season shouldn't inspire much confidence from fantasy owners.

Giants' Chris Marrero: Hits pine Wednesday
Marrero is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals, Alex Pavlovic of CSN Bay Area reports.
For the time being, it looks as though Marrero will serve as the Giants' primary left fielder while Jarrett Parker (clavicle) remains on the disabled list, but after going 0-for-7 at the dish while starting the last two games, he'll give way to Aaron Hill in left field. If neither Marrero nor Hill are able to generate much production in the weeks to come, it wouldn't be surprising if the Giants explored external options to provide an offensive upgrade at the position.

Giants' Chris Marrero: Gets start Sunday
Marrero will start in left field and bat eighth Sunday against the Rockies, Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
With the placement of Jarrett Parker (broken clavicle) on the 10-day disabled list, there will be a lot of reps open in left field, and Marrero could see many of them in the short term. Provided the weather holds up for Sunday's game, Marrero will have started in two of the team's last three contests. On the season, Marrero is 4-for-23 at the plate with one extra-base hit from an April 14 home run. As far as other options go, Aaron Hill or Brandon Belt are both capable of playing the outfield in a pinch, while the recently acquired Melvin Upon Jr., who is currently in the minors, could have a call-up awaiting him.

The 28-year-old started in Friday's win over the Rockets and notched a pair of hits, including a home run, but he'll return to the bench Saturday as the Giants go with an outfield of Jarrett Parker, Denard Span and Hunter Pence.

Giants' Chris Marrero: Struggles continue Tuesday
Marrero got the start in left field Tuesday, going 0-for-3 in a loss to Arizona.
The former top prospect tore the cover off of the ball in spring training, forcing his way into a left-field platoon with Jarrett Parker to open the regular season. Marrero has come back down to earth, batting .059 (1-for-17) against major-league pitching. With the Giants picking up veteran outfielders Melvin Upton Jr. and Drew Stubbs this past week, the pressure is now on the 28-year-old to turn things around quickly or risk being removed from the 25-man roster.

With the left-handed Robbie Ray taking the mound for the Diamondbacks, Marrero will start in place of Jarrett Parker. Marrero has played in two games and gone 0-for-5 to start the season.

Marrero moved into the conversation for a bench role after Mac Williamson (quadriceps) and Mike Morse (hamstring) went down with injuries, though he certainly earned his spot on the roster this spring. The 28-year-old slashed .266/.338/.641 with seven homers and 14 RBI during Cactus League play. He is a likely candidate to platoon with Jarrett Parker in left field to open the season.

While injuries to Mac Williamson and Mike Morse have helped open the door for Marrero to make his way onto the Opening Day roster, he has made quite the case for himself thanks to his strong play this spring. Marrero had seven home runs and eight doubles entering Thursday and continues to increase his chances at breaking camp with the big-league club. That said, the Giants have yet to officially add him to the 25-man roster, so Marrero will be a name to monitor over the weekend with Opening Day looming.

Giants' Chris Marrero: Injuries open up opportunity for roster spot
With Mac Williamson (quadriceps) and Mike Morse (hamstring) suffering injuries this week, Marrero has moved into the conversation for a bench role, CSN Bay Area reports.
Marrero was already making the decision hard for Giants management this spring, batting .302 and leading the club with six home runs. Now that two of the veterans ahead of him on the depth chart have gone down to injury, the 28-year-old has a better shot at making the cut. Manager Bruce Bochy has taken notice, stating that "[Marrero] plays first base, outfield, he's a right-handed bat. Chris is just doing all he can. It's been a great spring." The one aspect of the slugger's game that may hold him back in the minors is his outfield defense, something the natural first baseman has been working on in camp. If Marrero makes the Opening Day roster, he would be used primarily as a bench bat and see the occasional start in left.

Giants' Chris Marrero: Continues to flash power
Marrero went 1-for-2 with a walk-off, two-run homer in Wednesday's 6-5 win over Team Puerto Rico.
The home run was Marrero's fourth of the spring, leading all Giants by two in that category. The 2006 first-round pick wasn't expected to compete for a roster spot, but he has forced the club to at least consider him with his recent power surge. Marrero will find it hard to make the team as a first baseman, but he has been working out in the outfield during pre-game drills and reportedly has a strong arm from the outfield. He would need to log some game action out there before being considered a legitimate option, but at the very least, Marrero has put himself on the map with the power-starved Giants.

Marrero started Thursday's split-squad game at first base and went 1-for-4 with his second homer of spring training.
The slugging first baseman has gotten off to a hot start with the Giants, smacking two homers and driving in seven runs in 14 at-bats. Marrero has intriguing power potential (.284/.344/.494 with 23 homers with Triple-A Pawtucket last year), but he currently does not have a path to the majors with Brandon Belt and Conor Gillespie expected to make the 25-man roster. He should start the year with Triple-A Sacramento and be called upon if an injury opens up a spot during the regular season.

Marrero signed a minor league deal with the Giants on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reports.
Marrero has bounced between organizations since being outrighted by the Nationals at the end of 2013, spending time with the Orioles, White Sox, and Red Sox, but hasn't broken into the majors since 2013. He's coming off a strong season with Triple-A Pawtucket, hitting .284/.344/.494 with 23 homers, so the Giants could have a use for him if they find themselves needing a right-handed bat off the bench.
