The 34-year-old is out of the lineup for a third straight game Sunday after starting the season 4-for-34 with 13 strikeouts, and he's now decided to hang up his cleats after 14 seasons. Bruce has a .244/.314/.467 slash line with 319 home runs and 951 RBI in 1650 career games between the Reds, Mets, Phillies, Mariners, Yankees and Cleveland. • Yankees' Jay Bruce: Swats first homer with Yankees

Bruce went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and another run scored during Tuesday's win over Baltimore.

Bruce got the scoring started in the second inning by launching a solo homer off Dean Kremer. It was the first long ball of the year and the first in a Yankees uniform for the 34-year-old, who has been serving as the starting first baseman to begin the season with Luke Voit nursing a knee injury.

  • Yankees' Jay Bruce: Makes Opening Day roster

Bruce will make the Yankees' Opening Day roster, Jack Curry of YES Network reports.

Bruce appeared in 13 Grapefruit League games as a non-roster invitee this spring and hit .194 with two home runs and three RBI. Bruce's contract was officially selected by the Yankees on Saturday, and he'll serve as the starting first baseman to begin the regular season with Luke Voit (knee) sidelined, Brendan Kuty of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

  • Yankees' Jay Bruce: Making bid for roster spot

Bruce went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's Grapefruit League loss to Detroit.

The veteran slugger took Spencer Turnbull deep in the second inning to stake New York to an early lead. The blast was Bruce's second of spring training, and he is slashing .455/.455/1.091 overall through 11 plate appearances. The 33-year-old is in camp as a non-roster invitee, but he is making enough noise at the plate to keep his name in serious consideration for a spot on the Opening Day roster.

  • Yankees' Jay Bruce: Signs minor-league deal

Bruce signed a minor-league contract with the Yankees on Saturday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports.

Bruce appeared in 32 games for Philadelphia last year but had a career-worst .198 batting average with six home runs and 14 RBI during that time. The 33-year-old should now compete for a major-league roster spot with the Yankees during spring training, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him appear in the big leagues at some point in 2021.

  • Phillies' Jay Bruce: Sitting Sunday

Bruce is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Blue Jays.

Bruce returned from the 10-day injured list Friday and filled a starting role in the Phillies' last two games, going 1-for-7 with a double and a walk. Though he'll take a seat Sunday, Bruce should have a regular spot in the lineup waiting for him against right-handers during the final week of the season.

  • Phillies' Jay Bruce: Back from injured list

Bruce (quadriceps) was activated off the 10-day injured list Friday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

The 33-year-old aggravated his quadriceps injury Sept. 6 and has since been on the injured list, but he'll rejoin the roster for Friday's doubleheader. Bruce isn't in the lineup for the matinee but could return to the starting nine in Game 2.

  • Phillies' Jay Bruce: Not yet ready for IL return

Phillies manager Joe Girardi said Wednesday that Bruce (quadriceps) is still a couple days away from a return from the 10-day injured list, Matt Breen of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

With Kyle Garlick (oblique) and starting pitcher Jake Arrieta (hamstring) joining a growing list of banged-up Phillies on Tuesday, Bruce's impending return is a rare bit of positive injury news for the team. If Bruce gains clearance to play at some point during the Phillies' weekend series with the Blue Jays, he should immediately step back into a strong-side platoon role at designated hitter. He could also be in the mix for work at first base with Rhys Hoskins (elbow) in danger of missing the remainder of the season.
