Jones (3-4) picked up the win over the Cubs on Thursday, allowing three runs on seven hits while striking out seven over six innings. Jones allowed hits in four of his six innings of work, including a solo homer off the bat of Ian Happ to lead off the second. However, the right-hander still managed to log his third consecutive quality start while also posting at least seven strikeouts for the seventh time in nine outings this season. Jones produced 15 swings and misses on the night, though his seven hits allowed marked a season high. He's won just two of his last six decisions despite carrying a 2.89 ERA on the campaign.... Pirates' Jared Jones: Takes fourth loss
Jones (2-4) took the loss Friday against the Cubs, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out four. Jones allowed a solo homer to Cody Bellinger in the first inning before the Cubs tacked on runs in the fifth and sixth. The 22-year-old Jones has yet to allow more than three runs in a start this season -- his ERA sits at 2.68 with a 0.87 WHIP and 56:7 K:BB across 47 innings in his rookie campaign. Jones is currently lined up for a rematch with Chicago on the road in his next start.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jared Jones: Brilliant in no-decision
Jones did not factor into the decision in Saturday's win against the Rockies. He allowed one hit and no walks while striking out 10 over seven scoreless innings. The 22-year-old right-hander bounced back from a rather modest showing his last time out, matching his career high with 10 strikeouts. Jones got 17 swings and misses on 96 pitches and touched 100 mph with his heater a couple times. While he has a losing record at 2-3, Jones is off to a historically great start to his career. He became the first pitcher in Pirates history with an outing consisting of seven shutout innings, one hit or fewer allowed, 10 strikeouts and zero walks Saturday, and per MLB's Sarah Langs, Jones is the first pitcher since at least 1901 with 50-plus strikeouts and five or fewer walks in his first seven career starts.... Pirates' Jared Jones: Stumbles in San Francisco
Jones (2-3) allowed three runs on six hits and a walk over five innings Sunday, striking out three and taking a loss against the Giants. All three runs against Jones scored during a disastrous third inning. He gave up five hits in the frame, including solo homers by Thairo Estrada and Mike Yastrzemski to start things off. Jones' historic strikeout pace slowed down as he forced only seven swinging strikes in the subpar outing. As impressive as the right-handed rookie has been, he's been tagged with seven homers through his first six starts. He'll carry a 3.18 ERA into his next start, which is lined up to be at home against the Rockies.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jared Jones: Shines bright in victory
Jones (2-2) earned the win Monday against the Brewers, allowing one run, four hits and two walks over six innings. He struck out seven. Jones continued the impressive start to his career Monday night, striking out seven Brewers by generating an astounding 25 whiffs. The 22-year-old rookie has been electric to start the season, tossing a 2.79 ERA, 0.83 WHIP and 38:4 K:BB over 29 innings. The only question about Jones at this point appears to be how many innings the Pirates will let him throw this year. His next start is scheduled on the road against the Giants.... See More ... Pirates' Jared Jones: Throws five scoreless
Jones threw five scoreless innings during Tuesday's loss against the Mets while allowing one hit and striking out seven batters. He did not factor into the decision. Jones was dominant in his fourth career start, needing just 56 pitches to get through five innings while allowing just one batter to reach base. The 22-year-old likely could have continued pitching further into the game, but the Pirates' plan was always to limit him to five innings Tuesday. He departed with a 1-0 lead, but Pittsburgh's bullpen was unable to keep the Mets' offense quiet, leading to a 3-1 defeat and a no-decision for Jones. The right-hander now boasts a 3.13 ERA and 0.78 WHIP alongside a 32:2 K:BB ratio across 23 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jared Jones: Pitches well in defeat again
Jones (1-2) took the loss against Philadelphia on Thursday, allowing three runs on six hits and no walks while striking out eight batters over 6.1 innings. The rookie right-hander was very good in the outing, but home runs by Alec Bohm in the fourth inning and Brandon Marsh in the seventh accounted for three runs against him, which was enough to tag Jones with his second straight loss. He nonetheless continues to impress, as he's notched a quality start in two straight outings and has punched out at least seven batters in all three of his appearances so far this season. Overall, Jones has a a 4.00 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and outstanding 25:2 K:BB through 18 innings as a big-leaguer, so fantasy managers who roster him have ample reason to be excited for what lies ahead.... Pirates' Jared Jones: Selected to MLB roster
The Pirates selected Jones' contract from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday. Jones captured a spot in the Pirates rotation by allowing just three unearned runs to go along with a 15:8 K:BB in 16.1 innings during Grapefruit League play. The young right-hander is slated to make his major-league debut Saturday in Miami.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jared Jones: In line to start third game
General manager Ben Cherington said that Jones will start the Pirates' third game of the regular season Saturday in Miami, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Cherington confirmed that Jones will be part of the Pirates' Opening Day roster, though Pittsburgh still has yet to officially select the 22-year-old right-hander to the 40-man roster. Heading into spring training, Jones looked to be on the outside looking in for a rotation spot with the big club, but he made it impossible for the Pirates to leave him off the roster after he allowed just three unearned runs to go along with a 15:8 K:BB in 16.1 innings during the Grapefruit League. Like most young pitchers, control will likely be a concern for Jones in his first taste of the big leagues, but the strikeout upside he displayed in the spring as well as in every stop of the minors make him a worthy late-round target in fantasy drafts.... Pirates' Jared Jones: Makes Opening Day roster
Jones was informed Monday that he's made the Pirates' Opening Day roster, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. While the team has yet to confirm that Jones will be part of its rotation, that's the expectation. The hard-throwing right-hander earned a spot by allowing just three unearned runs during spring training, compiling a 15:8 K:BB over 16.1 innings of work. Jones has not yet pitched in the big leagues and doesn't have great control, but the 22-year-old certainly possesses some bat-missing ability.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jared Jones: Competing for rotation spot
Pirates manager Derek Shelton said Wednesday that Jones is among those competing for a spot in the rotation, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports. Jones has turned heads this spring, tossing 4.2 scoreless innings with a 3:3 K:BB while touching triple digits on the radar gun. The 22-year-old is not on the 40-man roster and held a 4.72 ERA during his time at Triple-A Indianapolis last season, which would seem to make him a long shot for the Opening Day roster on the surface. The Pirates have a couple rotation spots up for grabs, though, so Jones could make the decision difficult if he continues to pitch well.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jared Jones: Plenty of work early in spring
Jones has made two appearances and thrown 2.2 scoreless innings while allowing one hit and two walks while striking out two in Grapefruit League action. Jones pitched with Triple-A Indianapolis for half of the 2023 season. He struggled a bit at the level, putting up a 4.72 ERA and 1.32 WHIP across 82 innings, though his 99:34 K:BB highlights his potential. Jones is unlikely to make the Opening Day roster after the Pirates made multiple additions to the rotation this offseason, but he will almost certainly make his big-league debut at some point in 2024.... Pirates' Jared Jones: Promoted to Triple-A
Jones was promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis by the Pirates on Saturday, John Dreker of Pirates Prospects reports. A second-round pick by the Pirates in 2020, Jones has been outstanding for Double-A Altoona in 2023 with a 2.23 ERA and 1.08 WHIP while accumulating a 47:16 K:BB over 44.1 innings. The right-hander is now one stop away from reaching the majors, and he could make starts for the Pirates by the time 2023 comes to a close.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jared Jones: Goes on 7-day IL
Double-A Altoona placed Jones on its 7-day injured list Sunday with an unspecified injury. Jones is being shut down after turning in a 2.63 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 14:6 K:BB across 13.2 innings with Altoona. A timeline for his return likely won't be established until the nature of his injury is known.... See More ... See Less -
Pirates' Jared Jones: Sent to minor-league camp
Jones was reassigned Tuesday to the minor-league side of Pirates camp. Jones went as the No. 44 overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft, but he has struggled to a 4.63 ERA through 188.2 professional innings, all at the High-A level or below. The 21-year-old does tend to miss a lot of bats, but his command definitely needs some fine tuning.... See More ... See Less
