Jason Day crushed at The Players Championship. Combine that with his Match Play Championship victory and Arnold Palmer Invitational win, and this week's rankings are not a contest.
Let's look at the rankings, but first a look at the parameters.
1. Scope is last two months of tournaments
2. We value different things but will take into account wins, top 10s and money
3. If you haven't played, you don't get ranked (i.e. Tiger Woods)
4. Recency matters
5. PGA Tour will be main focus but bigger European events will be factored in.
1. Jason Day (Last week: 1): His finishes in the last two months: 1 | 1 | T10 | T23 | T5 | 1. He would have to do something spectacularly poor to not be No. 1 going into the U.S. Open. Official World Golf Ranking: 1
2. Rory McIlroy (3): McIlroy gets graded on an unfair curve because he's the best ball-striker on the planet. In a vacuum, his T12 at one of the toughest tournaments in the world is impressive. Watching it, though, you might not think that. OWGR: 3
3. Hideki Matsuyama (8): Hi, Hideki! Three top 10s, including two at the Masters and Players, in the last two months. Also had a T11 at Quail Hollow. If his putting could be, say, average, he would be a top-five player in the world. OWGR: 14
4. Adam Scott (7): Scotty recovered from a disastrous quadruple bogey early in the tournament to finish T12 along with McIlroy. On a leaderboard that lacked star power, that result gets Scott a bump. That Cadillac Championship/Honda Classic double from March is about to wear off though. OWGR: 7
5. Dustin Johnson (5): Johnson has had a strong couple of months. His T28 at The Players keeps him inside the top five. Also, he hit some great shots at Sawgrass. OWGR: 8
6. Louis Oosthuizen(6): Also finished T28 at The Players. Stays in the same slot as last week. OWGR: 13
7. Danny Willett (1): Dropping Willett to No. 7 after missing the cut at The Players might seem harsh, but he hasn't played since the Masters. Still, the Masters winner deserves to be in the top 10. OWGR: 9
8. Jordan Spieth (2): Spieth has the same problem as Willett. He hasn't played. He missed the cut by a stroke at Sawgrass. OWGR: 2
9. Kevin Chappell (NR): This is tough because Chappell didn't qualify for the Masters, but he has three top fives and two runners-up in the last two months. Have to slide him into the top nine after that impressive Sunday display at Sawgrass. Also, he's made nearly $2M in the last 60 days in just losing to Jason Day. OWGR: 33
10. Bubba Watson (9): His performance since that runner-up to Scott at the Cadillac Championship has been pretty bland. Racked up a T43 at The Players which isn't all that impressive (especially for somebody of Bubba's stature). OWGR: 4
11. Justin Rose (17): Nabbed a top 20 (barely) at The Players Championship. His ball-striking has been exquisite of late. The putting, not so much. OWGR: 10
12. Rickie Fowler (10): Last few months has been such a mixed bag for Fowler. A couple of top 10s but also a couple of missed cuts at the big boy events. Gets bonus points for putting together that spring break trip. OWGR: 5
13. Branden Grace (12): Trending the wrong way after a T57 at The Players. Still has that win at the Heritage to fall back on. OWGR: 11
14. Daniel Berger (NR): Welcome to the mix, youngster. Berger is a name that doesn't get enough Ryder Cup love. He has three top 10s in the last few months including two at the Masters and Players. That's a big deal. OWGR: 41
15. Charley Hoffman (13): Bad missed cut for Chuck who was as hot as anybody in the world coming into The Players. He should rebound nicely in Dallas. OWGR: 34
16. Patrick Reed (14): Wanted to see him contend at The Players after a so-so Masters. Instead, he missed the cut. OWGR: 12
17. J.B. Holmes (15): Two bad weeks in a row after a MC at Sawgrass, and all of a sudden Holmes is going the wrong way. OWGR: 20
18. Matt Kuchar (NR): Top 25 at the Masters followed by a T9 at the Heritage and a T3 last week at The Players. I can be into that. OWGR: 23
