Player Outlook
The Diamondbacks traded for Lourdes Gurriel to provide some right-handed thump to a predominantly left-handed outfield. He delivered with a career-high 24 homers, but his 106 wRC+ was its lowest since his rookie campaign. Gurriel split his time between left field and designated hitter, where he established new career highs with 145 games and 592 plate appearances. Despite his home run total, moving from Rogers Center to Chase Field suppressed Gurriel's power, but more importantly he was snake bit on ground ball BABIP as his .202 is well below the .265 mark he recorded coming into the season. Gurriel's defense in left field was stellar with 14 defensive runs saved in only 95 games. His arm and range rated as above average. This should help him maintain regular playing time and not fall back into the short side of a platoon. Gurriel has limited upside, but his floor offers stability to a mixed-league outfield.

After a production dip in 2022 while with Toronto, Gurriel has found a home in the desert. After his bounce-back season in 2023, the Diamondbacks inked him to a three-year deal. He'll toggle between left field and DH while batting mostly third in a lineup that's already scored 23 runs.

  • Diamondbacks' Lourdes Gurriel: Drives in five on Opening Day

Gurriel went 3-for-5 with a home run, three total runs and five total RBI in Thursday's 16-1 rout of the Rockies. Gurriel put Arizona on the board with his two-run blast to left field in the first inning and contributed to a 14-run explosion in the third with a pair of run-scoring singles. The veteran outfielder belted a career-high 24 homers last season in his first campaign with the Diamondbacks following an unusual prior season during which he batted .291 but went deep just five times over 492 plate appearances. He has a pretty stable batting-average floor and is a strong defensive player, though he's not the most exciting fantasy asset given his lack of speed and non-elite power.
