  • Giants' Luis Matos: Five RBI in win

Matos went 3-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI in Friday's 10-5 win over the Rockies.

Matos enjoyed one of the best games of his career, driving in at least a run with each of his hits. He added an RBI on a groundout in the seventh inning as well. The 22-year-old is hitting .333 (7-for-21) with 11 RBI and three extra-base hits over his first six contests this season. With Jung Hoo Lee (shoulder) out for the year, Matos has a golden opportunity to claim a full-time major-league job if he can keep hitting well.

  • Giants' Matt Chapman: Logs three hits, steal in win

Chapman went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a hit-by-pitch, one RBI, one stolen base and three runs scored in Friday's 10-5 win over the Rockies.

Chapman has gone 9-for-32 (.281) over his last eight games as he finally seems to be finding a rhythm at the plate. He got the Giants on the board with an RBI double in the first inning and continued to be involved in the team's subsequent rallies. The third baseman is slashing .218/.273/.362 with five home runs, 10 doubles, 20 RBI, 25 runs scored and four steals through 187 plate appearances this season. While his rate stats are well below his usual standard, the recent improvements are a reason for optimism, especially as he continues to hit in the heart of the order for a lineup devastated by injuries.

  • Giants' Thairo Estrada: Turns game around with homer

Estrada went 3-for-5 with a three-run home run and three total runs scored in Friday's 10-5 win over the Rockies.

Estrada's fifth-inning blast put the Giants ahead for the first time in the contest, and they held the lead the rest of the way. The second baseman had gone 4-for-22 (.182) over his previous six contests, though he had a pair of extra-base hits in that span. Estrada is up to an acceptable .250/.274/.435 slash line with seven homers, 24 RBI, 21 runs scored, eight doubles, one triple and one stolen base through 175 plate appearances in a starting role this season.

  • Giants' Sean Hjelle: Snags win in relief

Hjelle (1-1) allowed three hits and struck out one without walking a batter over two scoreless innings to earn the win Friday over the Rockies.

Hjelle was in the game when the Giants rallied ahead in the fifth inning, and they kept the lead the rest of the way. The right-hander has been decent in May, allowing two runs on 11 hits with a 14:0 K:BB over 10 innings across his last seven appearances. He's at a 2.81 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 17:1 K:BB through 16 innings this season as a multi-inning relief option for the Giants. Hjelle's also added two holds, but he has little chance of seeing consistent late-inning work.

  • Giants' Mason Black: Goes three innings Friday

Black allowed four runs on six hits and struck out two without walking a batter over three innings in a no-decision versus the Rockies on Friday.

Black was tagged for three runs in the first inning and gave up a solo home run to Jordan Beck in the second. This was Black's shortest of three major-league starts so far, likely due to the poor first run through the lineup. He's now at a 7.71 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 8:5 K:BB over 11.2 innings. The 24-year-old may have a chance to gain traction in the Giants' rotation while Keaton Winn (forearm) is on the injured list, though it's also possible Black gives way to Blake Snell (thigh) next week given the former's middling results so far for the Giants.

  • Giants' Marco Luciano: Making first start of 2024

Luciano is starting at shortstop and batting ninth in Friday's game against the Rockies, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Luciano made his 2024 debut Tuesday against the Dodgers when he pinch hit for Mike Yastrzemski in the ninth inning. Luciano started the season with Triple-A Sacramento, posting a .266/.399/.344 line with one home run and 20 RBI over 158 plate appearances before being recalled by the Giants on May 14. The 22-year-old appeared in 14 games for San Francisco in 2023, going 9-for-39 with three doubles and a stolen base across 14 games.

  • Giants' Casey Schmitt: Optioned to Sacramento

The Giants optioned Schmitt to Triple-A Sacramento on Friday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Schmitt will lose his spot on the big-league roster with Jorge Soler (shoulder) returning from the injured list Friday. Schmitt went just 3-for-22 and drove in one RBI during his brief stint in the majors, though he may return to San Francisco if the Giants need to rely on their organizational infield depth again later this season.

  • Giants' Jung Hoo Lee: Undergoing season-ending surgery

Lee is set to undergo season-ending surgery in the next few weeks for a torn labrum in his left shoulder, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Lee sustained the injury in the top of the first inning of Sunday's game against the Reds, when he crashed into the outfield wall while attempting to make a catch. He was placed on the 10-day IL with what was initially diagnosed as a dislocated left shoulder, but an MRI on Tuesday revealed further structural damage. Lee received multiple opinions on the injury, and season-ending surgery has ultimately been decided on for the 25-year-old outfielder. Lee signed a six-year, $113 million with the Giants in December of 2023 after seven seasons in the Korea Baseball Organization, and he will end his first season in the majors slashing .262/.310/.331 with four doubles, two home runs and eight RBI over 158 plate appearances. Luis Matos has started in center field in each game since Lee's injury, and the former will reprise that role again Friday against the Rockies.

  • Giants' Keaton Winn: Lands on injured list

The Giants placed Winn on the 15-day injured list Friday with a right forearm strain, retroactive to Wednesday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Although manager Bob Melvin described Winn's injury as mild, the 26-year-old's MRI results seemingly told a different story. Winn will now be sidelined for at least 14 more days while Mason Black comes up from Triple-A Sacramento to fill the open spot in San Francisco's pitching staff.

  • Giants' Jorge Soler: Returns to starting lineup

Soler (shoulder) is serving as the designated hitter and batting in the leadoff spot for Friday's game against the Rockies, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

The Giants reinstated Soler from the 10-day injured list Friday, per Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com. Soler made two rehab appearances with Triple-A Sacramento, and he went 2-for-3 with one RBI in his second outing Thursday. Before landing on the IL, the 32-year-old was slashing .202/.294/.361 with five home runs and eight RBI over 136 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Mason Black: Recalled from Triple-A

The Giants recalled Black from Triple-A Sacramento to start Friday's game against the Rockies, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Black was lit up for five runs in 4.1 innings during his MLB debut, but he managed to bounce back by giving up just one run in 4.1 frames during his second start against the Reds. Now, he'll return to the Giants' rotation and start Friday as Keaton Winn (forearm) lands on the injured list.

  • Giants' Jerar Encarnacion: Joining San Francisco organization

Encarnacion signed a minor-league deal with the Giants on Thursday.

Encarnacion was playing for Guerreros de Oaxaca of the Mexican League prior to the deal. He has only 81 career big-league plate appearances and was last a member of the Marlins organization.

  • Giants' Mike Yastrzemski: Launches fourth homer

Yastrzemski went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Wednesday's win over the Dodgers.

Yastrzemski hopped on a four-seamer from Elieser Hernandez in the bottom of the third and sent it into the stands to put the Giants up 2-0 and later added a single to give the outfielder his second consecutive multi-hit game. It marked Yastrzemski's fourth home run of the campaign and his second in the month of May, during which he's batting just .217. It also marked the first time this season in which he's strung together multiple hits in back-to-back contests.

  • Giants' Camilo Doval: Fans two for seventh save

Doval earned the save over the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing one hit and one walk over one inning while striking out two.

Doval entered the game with a three-run lead in the ninth and quickly retired the first two batters on strikes before walking Mookie Betts and surrendering a single to Shohei Ohtani. However, the right-hander was able to get Freddie Freeman to ground out for the final out and notch his seventh save in as many chances. Doval has also recorded two strikeouts in three straight appearances.

  • Giants' Jorge Soler: Starts rehab assignment

Soler (shoulder) went 0-for-4 with one strikeout in his first rehab game with Triple-A Sacramento on Wednesday.

Soler had a freak accident Tuesday when he was hit in the head by a ball while taking batting practice, but he came out of the incident no worse for wear and was cleared to begin his rehab assignment a day later. The slugger is coming back from a right shoulder strain and should be activated from the 10-day injured list in the coming days.

  • Giants' Logan Webb: Another shutout win

Webb (4-4) earned the win over the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing three hits and three walks over six shutout innings while striking out five.

Webb allowed three of the first four batters to reach base in the opening frame but managed to work his way out of the jam, getting two of the three outs by way of strikeout. The right-hander would allow just two walks and two singles from that point on en route to earning his fourth win of the season, snapping a three-game losing skid. Webb has now hurled six or more shutout innings in three of his last six starts, posting a 30:12 K:BB over that stretch. He's also logged quality starts in seven of his 10 outings this season.

  • Giants' Ryan Walker: Dealing with back tightness

Walker was unavailable for Wednesday's game versus the Dodgers due to back tightness, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.

Walker last pitched Sunday, allowing one run on four hits over one inning while taking a blown save versus the Reds, so it's possible he's been dealing with the issue for a while. For now, the right-hander can be considered day-to-day. The Giants are off Thursday before beginning a three-game series at home versus the Rockies on Friday.
