The Chiefs re-signed Pennel to a one-year-deal Wednesday, Sam McDowell of The Kansas City Star reports Pennel will stay in Kansas City after spending the majority of last season on the Chiefs' practice squad. The 32-year-old should compete for a spot as a reserve defender after compiling four tackles (two solo) across three appearances a season ago.... See More ... See Less

Bears' Mike Pennel: Slated for free agency
Pennel tallied one tackle in the Bears' 29-13 loss to the Vikings in Week 18, and ended the season with 26 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery over 17 games played. Pennel played about 20 snaps per game in a rotational role, and his tackle total is right in line with the production he's posted in most of his nine-year career. He's only had more than 29 tackles once in his career, and that was when he had 35 with the Jets in 2017. He should find a depth role next year, as he's now an unrestricted free agent.... Bears' Mike Pennel: Heading back to Chicago
Pennel signed a contract with the Bears on Monday, Kevin Fishbain of The Athletic reports. Pennel previously signed a one-year contract with the Bears in June 2021 but was released with an injury settlement after landing on the team's injured reserve just before the regular season. The 31-year-old nose tackle wound up signing a one-year contract with Atlanta and registered 21 tackles over 10 games as a rotational defensive lineman. Pennel should provide much-needed depth along Chicago's interior defensive line following the loss of veterans Akiem Hicks and Bilal Nichols in free agency.... See More ... See Less -
Falcons' Mike Pennel: Promoted from practice squad
Pennel was promoted to the Falcons' active roster from the practice squad Tuesday, Scott Bair of the team's official site reports. Pennell signed with Atlanta's practice squad in mid-September and will now join the active roster ahead of Week 5. Chiefs' Mike Pennel: Sustains two-game suspension
Pennel was handed a two-game suspension Tuesday, Field Yates of ESPN reports. There's no report about why Pennel was suspended, but the defensive tackle released an apology Tuesday that said, "I take full responsibility for what goes into my body and I promise to be more vigilant moving forward." Khalen Saunders is in line for the largest uptick in playing time during Pennel's absence.... See More ... See Less -
Chiefs' Mike Pennel: Makes 24 tackles in 2019
Pennel notched 24 tackles (13 solo) across eight regular-season games with the Chiefs in 2019. Pennel also made seven tackles in three postseason appearances. The 28-year-old joined Kansas City in Week 8 of the regular season after spending time with New England during training camp, and he immediately slotted into a rotational role at defensive tackle. He's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason.... See More ... See Less -
Mike Pennel: Hits open market
The Jets have declined Pennel's $1 million option bonus, allowing him to become a free agent, Field Yates of ESPN reports. Signed to a three-year, $10.5 million contract last offseason, Pennel played all 16 games (seven starts) in 2018, notching 27 tackles (16 solo) and two quarterback hits on 358 defensive snaps. He's a competent rotational lineman, but the fit in New York was questionable with the Jets transitioning to a 4-3 scheme.... See More ... See Less -
Jets' Mike Pennel: Signs with Jets
Pennel signed a contract with the Jets on Wednesday. Pennel was claimed by the Jets back in February but the team didn't tender him as a restricted free agent and let him hit the open market. The details of his deal are unclear, but he'll be with the team for at least next season. The four-year veteran had 24 tackles, including a sack, and a forced fumble while playing in eight games for the Packers in 2016.... See More ... See Less -
Mike Pennel: Dropped by Packers
Pennel was released by the Packers on Monday. Pennel's served two separate four-game suspensions this season, and after completing his latest punishment, he needed to be activated Monday in order to suit up during the playoffs, but the Packers declined that option by instead releasing him from their roster.
