Luzardo (elbow) struck out six and allowed one hit and one walk over 5.2 scoreless innings in a rehab start with Single-A Jupiter on Sunday. Luzardo needed just 67 pitches to cruise through his 5.2 frames. Per Kevin Barral of FishonFirst.com, Luzardo averaged 95.1 miles per hour and touched 96.4 mph with his four-seam fastball. The Marlins will likely wait a couple days to make sure Luzardo recovers from the rehab start without any issues, but he should be set up to return from the 15-day injured list for this weekend's series versus the Phillies.... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Rehab start coming soon
Luzardo (elbow) threw a successful bullpen session Thursday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Luzardo will make a rehab start sometime during the Marlins' upcoming road trip. The left-hander is eligible for activation from the 15-day injured list on May 10, and he could be a realistic candidate to start against the Phillies that day, if all goes well in his throwing program. Luzardo has been working his way back from a mild left flexor strain.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Out to 90 feet Tuesday
Luzardo (elbow) will extend his catch out to 90 feet Tuesday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Working his way back from a mild left flexor strain, Luzardo played catch Monday and will do so for a second straight day Tuesday. He will continue with a throwing progression as tolerated. Luzardo is eligible to return May 10, but there's no firm timetable for his potential activation yet.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Diagnosed with mild flexor strain
Luzardo was diagnosed Monday with a mild flexor strain in his left elbow, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The diagnosis is relatively good news, especially considering that Luzardo was able to play catch Monday, three days after tightness in his pitching arm forced him to the injured list. Luzardo is without a timeline at this stage to return from the IL, but more clarity on that front could come once he advances to the point in his recovery program where he's able to face hitters.... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Slated to play catch Monday
Luzardo (elbow) will play catch Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. The Marlins haven't provided word regarding the findings of the test results on Luzardo's left elbow from over the weekend, but the fact that he's already been cleared to throw just three days after landing on the 10-day injured list certainly seems like a good sign. Luzardo is eligible to return from the IL on May 10, but it's still too early in his recovery to know whether he might make it back by that date.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Moves to injured list
The Marlins placed Luzardo on the 15-day injured list Friday with left elbow tightness. The left-hander was scratched from Friday's start against Washington due to the injury and will now be sidelined for at least the next couple weeks. According to Christina De Nicola of MLB.com, Luzardo first felt the elbow issue while playing catch Thursday and believes it shouldn't be a lengthy absence, though he's also awaiting test results that should provide more clarity on the injury.... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Scratched due to sore elbow
Luzardo has been scratched from Friday's scheduled outing against the Nationals due to left elbow soreness. Luzardo felt soreness in his pitching elbow Thursday and is set to undergo further testing. It's yet another blow to a Marlins pitching staff that's sustained plenty of them early on this season. Anthony Maldonado will be called up from Triple-A Jacksonville to work as the opener Friday in a bullpen game for Miami. Luzardo has had an uneven 2024 season, collecting a 6.58 ERA, 1.42 WHIP and 27:13 K:BB over 26 innings covering his first five starts.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Rebounds with quality start
Luzardo didn't factor in the decision in Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cubs. He struck out six and gave up two runs on three hits and three walks across six innings. The left-hander surrendered a two-run triple to Patrick Wisdom during the third inning but otherwise kept Chicago off the board. The quality start is a welcome sight for Luzardo, who allowed 12 runs over his previous two outings and gave up at least one homer in each of his first four starts. Luzardo currently lines up to pitch next weekend versus the Nationals in Miami.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Ineffective versus Atlanta
Luzardo pitched five innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out four batters in Sunday's 9-7 loss to Atlanta. He did not factor into the decision. Luzardo ran into trouble early Sunday, first allowing a run on sacrifice fly by Adam Duvall in the top of the second inning before giving up two runs in each of the third and fourth frames. The left-hander has now surrendered 12 runs over 9.2 innings in his last two starts, watching his ERA grow from 4.35 to 7.65 over 20 innings in four outings in 2024. Luzardo will look to get back on track in his next projected start Friday on the road versus the Cubs.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Allows 13 baserunners, seven runs
Luzardo took the loss Monday against the Yankees, allowing seven runs on eight hits and five walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out four. Luzardo's outing started out well enough as he held the Yankees scoreless through three innings, but he ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing three-run homers to both Anthony Volpe and Juan Soto that proved to be more than enough for the red-hot Bronx Bombers. Luzardo went back out for the fifth and allowed one more run prior to being removed with two outs in the inning. In total, Luzardo allowed 13 runners to reach base while recording just 14 outs. Things likely won't be any easier in his next outing as he looks to right the ship in what is scheduled to be a home matchup over the weekend against Atlanta.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Strikes out eight in no-decision
Luzardo tossed five innings, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks while striking out eight in Thursday's Opening Day loss to Pittsburgh. He did not factor into the decision. Luzardo allowed a two-run home run to Bryan Reynolds but was otherwise unblemished in a solid first start of the season. Manager Skip Schumaker elected to pull Luzardo after 85 pitches with a three-run cushion, but the bullpen slowly leaked away the lead, finally losing the game in the 12th inning. The lefty begins the campaign as the ace of a Miami staff that is missing three starters due to injury.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Focused on efficiency
Luzardo is focused on pitching deeper into games this season, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. With Sandy Alcantara out for all of 2024 while he recovers from Tommy John surgery, Luzardo is stepping into the role of staff ace for the Marlins, and he's taking the job seriously. "First-pitch strikes are No. 1 probably on his list, and then early outs," manager Skip Schumaker said Tuesday. "We want him to eat up innings. He wants to eat up innings and he wants to be the ace of the staff... He wants to show that he can go deep in games and help out the bullpen and be that guy." Luzardo lasted at least seven innings in only five of his 32 starts last season, although he did produce 17 quality starts, so better pitch efficiency would put less pressure on the Miami bullpen. The 26-year-old southpaw struggled to put away hitters in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros, allowing three runs on five hits over 3.1 innings and 67 pitches (45 strikes), but he struck out four without walking a batter and now sports a 12:1 K:BB through 12 spring frames.... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Can't keep ball in park Wednesday
Luzardo gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits over 3.2 innings in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. He struck out three without walking a batter. The line doesn't look pretty, but the wind at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium may have played a factor -- three of the hits Luzardo allowed left the yard, including homers by the light-hitting Luis Garcia and Victor Robles. Luzardo built up to 57 pitches (38 strikes), and through his first 8.2 spring innings he's posted a sharp 8:1 K:BB, a strong sign he's just about ready for Opening Day.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Tapped to start Opening Day
Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said Tuesday that Luzardo will be the club's Opening Day starter March 28 versus the Pirates, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. With Sandy Alcantara (elbow) slated to miss the entirety of the 2024 campaign, Luzardo was the obvious choice to take the ball Opening Day. The left-hander collected a 3.58 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 208:55 K:BB across 178.2 innings covering 32 starts in 2023. He should remain a fantasy standout for the Marlins in 2024.... See More ... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Perfect start to spring
Luzardo struck out three batters over two perfect innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Nationals. The 26-year-old southpaw got his spring off to a flying start, tossing 17 of 23 pitches for strikes against a patchwork Washington lineup headlined by Joey Meneses and top prospect James Wood. Luzardo threw a career-high 178.2 innings last year, striking out 208 batters with a 3.58 ERA and 1.21 WHIP, and he heads into the 2024 campaign looking to establish himself as a reliable frontline starter.... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Avoids arbitration at $5.5 million
The Marlins and Luzardo avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $5.5 million contract Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Luzardo is in his second year of arbitration eligibility and will receive a much-deserved raise. The left-hander posted a 3.58 ERA in 32 starts for Miami in 2023, finishing with a 208:55 K:BB over 178.2 innings. Luzardo has been mentioned as a possible trade chip, but it would take a haul to pry him away from the Marlins.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Tabbed as Game 1 starter
Luzardo will start Game 1 of the NL Wild Card Series against the Phillies on Tuesday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The Phillies' playoff rotation has yet to be announced. Luzardo had a 2.91 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 38 strikeouts in 34 innings over his final six starts of the season.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Dominates in 10th win
Luzardo (10-9) allowed four hits and two walks over six shutout frames Sunday, striking out eight and earning a win against Atlanta. Luzardo worked around a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning but didn't face much of a threat otherwise. He's turned in three scoreless performances over his last five starts, posting a 2.48 ERA during that span and lowering his season ERA to 3.68. However, he's allowed at least four runs in four of his eight outings since the start of August. Luzardo's next start is currently projected to be at home against the Brewers.... See More ... Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Hit hard by Brewers
Luzardo (9-9) allowed six runs on 10 hits and four walks over five innings Monday, striking out five and talking a loss against Milwaukee. Luzardo coughed up a solo homer to Mark Canha to begin the game but it was Milwaukee's four-run third inning that really buried the Marlins. Luzardo had allowed just two runs over his previous three starts but he's now given up at least six runs in three of his last six appearances. His season ERA jumped to 3.82 with a 186:49 K:BB through 160.1 frames. Luzardo is currently lined up to face Atlanta at home this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Jesus Luzardo: Sharp against Dodgers
Luzardo did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and a walk over six innings against the Dodgers. He struck out six. Luzardo's now logged three straight quality starts, allowing just two runs in that span (18 innings) after struggling to an 11.68 ERA in his previous three outings. Overall, his ERA is down to 3.59 on the season with a 1.20 WHIP and 181:45 K:BB across 28 starts (155.1 innings). The 25-year-old Luzardo will look to keep rolling in his next start, currently lined up for early next week in Milwaukee.... See More ... See Less
