  Weems (1-0) recorded a blown save and a win Tuesday against the Giants, giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits in an inning of relief. He struck out one. The right-hander entered a 3-1 game in the sixth inning and couldn't close the door, but the Nationals answered back with a go-ahead run in the top of the seventh. Weems has been solid in the early going, appearing in five of Washington's 11 games and posting a 1.80 ERA and 5:2 K:BB over five innings with two holds in addition to Tuesday's win.

Weems battled an illness earlier in the week that left him unavailable for the Nationals' series opener versus Pittsburgh, but he looks to be in the clear on the health front. After turning in a 3.62 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 60:28 K:BB in 54.2 innings over his 51 appearances with Washington in 2023, Weems should be a key part of the bridge to the ninth inning this season.

The 31-year-old converted catcher established himself as a reliable bullpen option with the Nationals in 2023, recording five wins and seven holds over 51 appearances with a 3.62 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 60:28 K:BB. Weems is on the fringes of high-leverage usage but will begin the season behind Kyle Finnegan, Hunter Harvey and Tanner Rainey in the pecking order from the right side, making him unlikely to see any save chances.

He's stumbled to a 5.06 ERA, 1.59 WHIP and 10:10 K:BB through 10.2 innings in September, and he's far from guaranteed a key role in the Nationals' 2024 bullpen despite his 96 mph fastball and sharp slider.

  Weems (1-0) walked two and struck out three over two scoreless, no-hit innings of relief Tuesday to pick up the win in an extra-innings victory over the Mariners. The one-time catcher converted to pitching in 2016 and made his big-league in the Oakland bullpen in 2020, but it wasn't until Tuesday he was able to notch his first big-league win. Weems appears to have figured things out in the Washington system, and since his promotion in early June he has a 2.25 ERA, 0.67 WHIP and 11:4 K:BB through 12 innings. The 30-year-old right-hander isn't likely to claim a high-leverage role, however, even if the Nats ship out relievers like Kyle Finnegan before the trade deadline.
