Defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said Wednesday that Thomas will have to compete for the Colts' starting free safety job in 2024, James Boyd of The Athletic reports. Thomas started 15 of 17 games last season, but that doesn't mean he'll maintain his spot atop the depth chart heading into 2024. Bradley stated that both Daniel Scott (knee) and Nick Cross will have the opportunity to take the job from Thomas, who finished the 2023 campaign with 34 tackles, four pass breakups and two interceptions.... Thomas is not practicing Tuesday due to a toe injury, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports. It's unclear how long Thomas may need to be sidelined, but any kind of extended absence would be detrimental to the Colts' secondary. Colts' Rodney Thomas: Gets another start at free safety
Thomas had one total tackle but played on all 59 of the defense's snaps in Sunday's loss at Tennessee. Thomas got the start at free safety even with Julian Blackmon active and playing 21 snaps. It's not clear if Thomas has overtaken Blackmon for the starting job or if Blackmon is just working his way back to full speed after not playing for three games due to an ankle injury....
