Player Outlook
An eighth-round selection out of Ohio State in 2019, Dominic Canzone tore up minor-league pitching in his time in the Arizona system, and he was one of the key components of the trade that sent Paul Sewald from the Mariners to the Diamondbacks near the deadline. His time in the majors wasn't nearly as successful with a OPS of .657 with six homers in 59 games at the highest level, but there were enough flashes of success combined with his stats in the minors to believe that there's fantasy upside in his profile. There's well above-average power in his left-handed bat, and he did a good job of making consistent contact with a strikeout rate of just 17.6 percent in his rookie campaign. The 26-year-old didn't show much patience at the plate, however, and well below-average speed means he won't be a stolen-base threat now or going forward. Canzone will have a chance to win a regular spot with the Mariners against right-handed pitching barring a plethora of offseason moves, and a breakout season -- while far from a foregone conclusion -- is well within reach.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Hitting bench versus lefty

Canzone is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals. The Mariners will go with a right-handed-heavy lineup to counter Nationals southpaw Patrick Corbin, with Canzone hitting the bench for Seattle along with fellow left-handed hitters Luke Raley and Josh Rojas. The absences of Raley and Canzone will open up starts in the corner outfield for Jonatan Clase and Mitch Haniger.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Out against southpaw

Canzone is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Washington. The lefty-hitting Canzone will cede right field duties to Mitch Haniger as the Mariners take on southpaw MacKenzie Gore. Canzone is slashing .208/.278/.500 with four home runs and eight RBI in his second major-league season.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Hitting bench versus lefty

Canzone is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Yankees. After returning last Wednesday following a month-long stay on the injured list, Canzone had started in all but one of the Mariners' ensuing six games, going 3-for-14 with a pair of extra-base hits and two walks. While the lefty-hitting Canzone will hit the bench against Yankees southpaw Nestor Cortes, look for manager Scott Servais to open up playing time for both Canzone and fellow left-handed hitter Luke Raley at the corner-outfield spots when the Mariners face right-handed pitching. To get Raley in the lineup, Mitch Garver and Mitch Haniger have been losing out on more opportunities against right-handed pitching since Canzone's return from the IL.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Knocks fourth homer Monday

Canzone went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and an RBI sacrifice fly in a win over the Yankees on Monday. Canzone was instrumental to the one-run win, igniting the Mariners' comeback from a 3-0 deficit with his 426-foot solo shot to center in the eighth inning. The 26-year-old then delivered a game-tying sacrifice fly in the following frame, giving him his third multi-RBI effort of the season. Canzone's homer also was his first since April 9, with a month-long stay on the injured list due to a shoulder injury largely to blame for the extended drought.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Returns from IL

The Mariners reinstated Canzone (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday. The Mariners weren't expected to bring Canzone back from the IL until this weekend, but he'll end up joining the club for its series finale with the Royals after he checked out fine following his third rehab game with Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday. Prior to landing on the shelf April 15 with a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder, Canzone had taken hold of a strong-side platoon role in left field. Those duties have largely fallen to Luke Raley during his absence, and though Raley has enjoyed a hot run at the plate of late, Canzone will step into the starting lineup in his first game back with the team. He'll man left field and bat seventh Wednesday against the Royals.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Could return this weekend

Canzone (shoulder), who took a full game's worth of plate appearances as the designated hitter for Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday, could be activated ahead of the start of the Mariners' next road trip Friday, MLB.com reports. Canzone went 2-for-5 with an RBI double Sunday for the Rainiers after also lacing a two-bagger in his rehab debut Saturday. Canzone's timing at the plate already seems to be in good shape, and if he continues without any physical setbacks, it appears he could be ready to jump back into action with the Mariners beginning Friday against the Orioles.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Doubles in rehab debut

Canzone (shoulder) started in left field and played five innings during Triple-A Tacoma's loss to Reno on Saturday, going 1-for-3 with a double. Canzone's rehab debut appears to have been a success, with the 26-year-old logging his first game action since April 14. Canzone is projected for three more games with the Rainiers before activation is considered, and it remains to be seen if he'll be back in Tacoma's lineup Sunday.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Resumes swinging

Manager Scott Servais said Tuesday that Canzone (shoulder) has resumed swinging a bat at the Mariners' spring training complex in Arizona, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Servais seemed pleased with the progress Canzone has made since landing on the injured list April 15. However, he noted that Canzone will require an extended rehab assignment, so the 26-year-old outfielder is likely still a few weeks away from returning to the Seattle lineup.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: No timeline on return

Mariners manager Scott Servais said Monday that there is no set timeline for Canzone (shoulder), Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Canzone was placed on the 10-day IL on Monday. He sustained a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder Sunday after colliding with the outfield wall. Servais added that Canzone will be down at least a couple of weeks. While Canzone is out, Jonatan Clase will see more starts in left field, beginning Monday against the Reds.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Doesn't have structural damage

Canzone does not have structural damage to his left shoulder and will not require surgery, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. He's dealing with a sprained AC joint, but an MRI cleared him of any additional damage. Canzone will be sidelined at least a couple weeks, but it sounds like the diagnosis was close to a best-case scenario. Jonatan Clase is expected to see the bulk of the at-bats in left field in Canzone's place.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Exits with apparent shoulder issue

Canzone was removed from Sunday's game against the Cubs with an apparent shoulder injury, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Canzone suffered the injury during the second inning when he collided with the wall in left field while making a catch. The 26-year-old didn't have a plate appearance prior to the injury and should be considered day-to-day as he continues to be evaluated.

Canzone isn't in the Mariners' lineup for Saturday's game against the Cubs. • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Heads to bench vs. lefty

Canzone is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. With lefty Yusei Kikuchi on the bump for Toronto, Canzone, who connected for his third home run of the season in Tuesday night's loss, and fellow left-handed hitter Josh Rojas will retreat to the bench. Dylan Moore will fill in for Canzone in left field, while Luis Urias starts in place of Rojas at third base.

Canzone went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer in Sunday's 12-4 loss to the Brewers. Canzone left the yard for the second time this season, but it merely cut the Mariners' deficit to 12-4. Sunday was the first start in the early season during which Canzone did not strike out, as the 26-year-old is slashing just .174/.174/.435 with five RBI and a 0:9 BB:K in 23 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Sits down Saturday

Canzone isn't in the Mariners' lineup for Saturday's game against Boston. Canzone was originally set to receive a day off Friday, but Mitch Garver was scratched due to back spasms, causing Canzone to re-enter the lineup. The 26-year-old outfielder will now get a breather while Luke Raley starts in left field and bats seventh.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Will play Friday

Canzone will start in left field and bat eighth Friday against the Red Sox. Canzone was initially set to sit Friday, but he's been inserted back into the starting lineup. • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Projected as Opening Day starter

Daniel Kramer of MLB.com projects Canzone as the Mariners' Opening Day starter in left field following an impressive spring. Canzone finished Cactus League play having slashed .316/.372/1.109 with four doubles, four home runs and 11 RBI across 43 plate appearances. A trade-deadline acquisition from the Diamondbacks last season, Canzone also swiped a pair of bases during the exhibition slate, and he should see plenty of playing time against right-handed pitching beginning with Thursday's regular-season opener against the Red Sox.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: On bench again Friday

Canzone remains out of the lineup Friday versus the Rangers. Canzone is in a 5-for-36 (.139) slump and has now started only one of the Mariners' last seven games. Jarred Kelenic, Julio Rodriguez and Teoscar Hernandez will patrol the outfield Friday as Mike Ford occupies the DH role.
