Player Outlook
The best skill Buddy Kennedy has shown during his time in the minors has been his ability to draw a walk, as he drew free passes at a 16.4 percent rate in 2023 at the Triple-A level and boasts a 12.6 percent walk rate over six seasons on the farm. He did club 22 home runs and stole 16 bases between the High- and Double-A levels in 2021, but both of those numbers look like clear outliers in his career. Kennedy did very little in spot duty with the Diamondbacks the last two seasons and then jumped to the Oakland and St. Louis organizations via waivers. The 25-year-old is part of a crowded competition for a reserve infielder role but seems likely to report to Triple-A Memphis to begin the 2024 campaign.

  • Phillies' Buddy Kennedy: Traded to Phillies

The Phillies acquired Kennedy from the Tigers on Friday in exchange for cash considerations and optioned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. The official transactions log on MLB.com had listed Kennedy as having been outrighted by the Tigers after clearing waivers, but that was erroneous and has since been deleted. Instead, he's headed to Lehigh Valley, where he will give the Phillies some infield depth. Kennedy has slashed .205/.294/.316 in 46 games over parts of three seasons in the majors.

  • Tigers' Buddy Kennedy: Outrighted to Triple-A

The Tigers outrighted Kennedy to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday after he cleared waivers. Kennedy could elect free agency if he wants, but it's not clear at this point whether he will do so. If he doesn't, he'll join Toledo, where he will represent infield depth for the Tigers.

  • Tigers' Buddy Kennedy: DFA'd by Detroit

The Tigers designated Kennedy for assignment Monday. Kennedy was optioned to Triple-A Toledo on April 30 after appearing in six games for the Tigers and going 2-for-10 with one stolen base, one home run and four RBI. The 25-year-old had been performing at a below-league-average level with Toledo for the season, slashing .234/.331/.383 (88 wRC+) across 163 plate appearances. Kennedy could remain with the organization if he clears waivers, but he'll cede his spot on the 40-man roster to outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy, who was called up from Triple-A on Monday.

  • Tigers' Buddy Kennedy: Optioned to Triple-A

The Tigers optioned Kennedy to Triple-A Toledo on Monday. Kennedy is being sent out to make room for Andy Ibanez (hamstring), who will be activated from the injured list prior to Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Cardinals. He's 2-for-10 with one homer and one stolen base during his brief time with the big club this season.

  • Tigers' Buddy Kennedy: Swipes first career bag

Kennedy went 1-for-4 with a run scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's 7-5 loss to the Rays. Getting the start at second base and batting seventh with Tampa Bay southpaw Tyler Alexander set for a bulk relief outing, Kennedy swiped his first career base in the majors while collecting his second hit since his promotion. The 25-year-old has supplied a homer and four RBI in four games, and he could spot in around the Tigers' injury-weakened infield more often than expected if he continues to produce.

  • Tigers' Buddy Kennedy: Launches first homer

Kennedy went 1-for-2 with a home run, three RBI and a walk in Sunday's win over Minnesota. Kennedy brought home a run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning before drilling a two-run shot in the third. It was his first MLB home run since the 2022 campaign. The 25-year-old slashed .288/.354/.509 with nine extra-base hits in 15 games with Triple-A Toledo prior to being called up Saturday.

  • Tigers' Buddy Kennedy: Optioned to Triple-A

The Tigers optioned Kennedy to Triple-A Toledo on Thursday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Kennedy was claimed off waivers in late February and wasn't able to push for an Opening Day roster spot. The infielder will likely bounce between second and third base while at Toledo.

  • Tigers' Buddy Kennedy: Claimed by Detroit

The Tigers claimed Kennedy off waivers from the Cardinals on Thursday. Kennedy was DFA'd by St. Louis on Tuesday to make room for Brandon Crawford, and Kennedy will now look to make a name for himself in Detroit. The 25-year-old owns a .592 career OPS through 123 big-league plate appearances, but he slashed .318/.444/.481 with Arizona's Triple-A affiliate in 2023. Kennedy will likely return to Triple-A to begin the new season, but he could play for the Tigers at some point if his bat stays hot in the minors. Andre Lipcius was designated for assignment in a corresponding move.

  • Cardinals' Buddy Kennedy: Designated for assignment

Kennedy was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Tuesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Brandon Crawford. Kennedy was a waiver claim from the Athletics earlier this offseason and will now go through the waiver process again.

  • Athletics' Buddy Kennedy: Claimed by Oakland

Kennedy was claimed off waivers by the Athletics on Saturday and optioned to Triple-A Las Vegas. Kennedy gets to remain on a 40-man roster after being designated for assignment by the Diamondbacks on Wednesday, but it's not clear when he'll get his next crack at the big leagues. In 40 major-league games across the last two seasons, the infielder owns a .206/.293/.299 slash line with one homer and zero steals.

  • Diamondbacks' Buddy Kennedy: Optioned to Triple-A

Arizona optioned Kennedy to Triple-A Reno on Friday. Kennedy went 4-for-24 in 10 games after being selected from Reno in mid-August, and he'll now return to the minors in favor of Emmanuel Rivera. There remains a chance Kennedy can return to Arizona if he heats up again in the minors, but odds are he finishes the season in Triple-A.

  • Diamondbacks' Buddy Kennedy: Back in majors

Kennedy was recalled from Triple-A Reno on Friday. Kennedy, who turns 24 on the final day of the regular season, slashed .261/.363/.385 with seven home runs in 93 games at Triple-A this season and has a .626 OPS through 80 at-bats in the majors. This is the corresponding move to Ketel Marte going on the injured list, so Kennedy could see time at second base over the final days of the season.

  • Diamondbacks' Buddy Kennedy: Joins Saturday's lineup

Kennedy was added to the lineup for Saturday's game against Atlanta. Kennedy is serving as the designated hitter and batting seventh Saturday after David Peralta was traded to the Rays. Kennedy has gone 2-for-5 with a walk and two strikeouts over two games since the All-Star break.

  • Diamondbacks' Buddy Kennedy: Delivers run with triple

Kennedy went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Padres. Kennedy delivered the Diamondbacks' first run with a triple in the fourth inning, his first RBI in nine games. He's been getting steady playing time at second base while Ketel Marte deals with a lingering hamstring injury that's limited him to designated-hitter duty, but that run could end soon. Arizona manager Torey Lovullo indicated earlier this week that the team has a plan in place for Marte to get back to playing the field, a process that should begin in earnest following the All-Star break. Kennedy is batting .250 (13-for-52) with two doubles, one triple, eight RBI and six runs scored over the last 19 games as the Diamondbacks' primary second baseman.

  • Diamondbacks' Buddy Kennedy: Heads to bench Sunday

Kennedy is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rockies. After going 2-for-4 with a run scored in Saturday's 9-2 win over the Rockies, Kennedy will take a seat for the series finale. Though he's on the bench for the second time in three games, Kennedy still looks like the Diamondbacks' preferred option at the keystone over Sergio Alcantara, who draws the start at the position Sunday.

  • Diamondbacks' Buddy Kennedy: Continues at 2B

Kennedy made a fifth consecutive start at second base Friday and went 0-for-4 in a 9-3 win over the Rockies. Kennedy is the beneficiary of the Diamondbacks keeping Ketel Marte at designated hitter as the club's usual starter at second base works his way back from a hamstring strain. With Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic reporting that Marte will remain DH through the current series against Colorado, Kennedy is in line for at least two more starts at second base. He's batting .152 over 11 games since having his contract selected.

Kennedy went 1-for-3 with a double, three RBI and a hit-by-pitch in Tuesday's 7-6 win over San Diego. Kennedy drove in two runs during Arizona's four-run seventh inning and knocked in another when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the eighth. He was an integral component to the Diamondbacks erasing a six-run deficit with seven runs over the final three innings. Kennedy continues to get starts at second base while Ketel Marte works his way back from a hamstring injury that's limited him to designated-hitter duty.

  • Diamondbacks' Buddy Kennedy: Scores run in return

Kennedy (wrist) went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in Saturday's 6-3 loss to the Tigers. Kennedy missed two games with left wrist discomfort, but he was able to play a full game at second base Saturday. He has a home run, four RBI, four runs scored and a triple through 22 plate appearances in his first seven big-league games. Kennedy should continue to compete with Jake Hager for playing time at second base until Ketel Marte, who is serving as the designated hitter while recovering from a hamstring injury, is ready to return to the field.

  • Diamondbacks' Buddy Kennedy: Remains out of lineup

Kennedy (wrist) isn't in the lineup Friday against the Tigers. Kennedy has been dealing with left wrist discomfort since Tuesday and will be out of the lineup for a second consecutive game. Jake Hager is starting at second base while Ketel Marte serves as the designated hitter.

  • Diamondbacks' Buddy Kennedy: Exits with wrist injury

Kennedy was removed from Tuesday's game against the Padres with left wrist discomfort. Kennedy appeared to tweak something when he struck out swinging during the top of fourth inning, and he was replaced in the field for the bottom of the frame. The severity of the 23-year-old's wrist injury remains unclear, and he should be considered day-to-day until his status is updated.
