The Royals placed Massey on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a low back ligament sprain. The transaction is retroactive to Saturday, so he'll be eligible to rejoin the 26-man active roster beginning June 4. Kansas City called up infielder Nick Loftin from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move, but Adam Frazier will pick up his second straight start at the keystone Sunday and should serve as the Royals' primary second baseman while Massey is on the mend from the injury.... Royals' Michael Massey: Not starting Saturday
Massey (back) is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Rays. Massey exited in the sixth inning of Friday's 8-1 over win over Tampa Bay due to lower-back tightness. Before the injury, he went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. While the Royals evaluate Massey's back injury, Adam Frazier will start at second base Saturday and bat sixth against Rays right-hander Aaron Civale.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Idle against lefty
Massey is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Tigers. With ace southpaw Tarik Skubal on the hill for the Tigers, the Royals will stock up on extra right-handed bats in the series finale. The lefty-hitting Massey will thus cede his spot at the keystone to the right-handed-hitting Garrett Hampson.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Homers among three hits
Massey went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in Friday's win over Oakland. Massey cracked his fourth home run of the season in the sixth inning, hitting it 368 feet to right field. The 26-year-old has enjoyed a hot start to May, batting .288 (15-for-52) with three homers, five runs scored and 11 RBI this month. Overall, Massey is slashing .259/.261/.447 over 90 plate appearances while being locked into the starting second base job for Kansas City.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Pops homer in win
Massey went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 3-2 win over the Brewers. Massey got the Royals on the board in the seventh inning. The second baseman continues to hit well after a brief stretch to get up to speed following his April 19 season debut. Massey has hit safely in nine straight games and has an extra-base hit in five of the last six contests. He's slashing .294/.308/.529 with three homers, 10 RBI, nine runs scored, three doubles and no stolen bases through 53 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Swats first homer of season
Massey went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Blue Jays. Massey has hit safely in four straight games, going 4-for-14 with three RBI and three runs scored. The 26-year-old is seeing a majority of the playing time at second base since he returned from a back injury that shelved him for a month. Massey is batting .212 with one homer, five RBI, five runs scored and no stolen bases through 10 contests. Barring a deep slump, Massey should continue to play more frequently than Adam Frazier at second base, though Frazier has also gotten looks in the corner outfield spots and at designated hitter.... Royals' Michael Massey: Sits against lefty
Massey is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers. With a tough lefty (Tarik Skubal) on the hill for Detroit, the lefty-hitting Massey will hit the bench in the series finale. Garrett Hampson steps in for Massey at second base.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Not in Wednesday's lineup
Massey is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays. The 26-year-old had started four of the first five games after being activated from the injured list, but he'll head to the bench Wednesday while Adam Frazier handles second base. Massey is 3-for-14 with two RBI since returning from a back injury.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Activated, starting Friday
Massey (back) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at second base Friday versus the Orioles, The 26-year-old opened the season on the injured list due to a back strain but is back with the Royals after he posted a 1.123 OPS over an eight-game rehab assignment. Massey could split playing time at the keystone with veteran Adam Frazier, but both hit left-handed so a traditional platoon isn't an option. Manager Matt Quatraro is more likely to ride the hot hand between them.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Expected back Friday
Massey (back) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Anne Rogers reports. Nick Loftin was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday and Massey is expected to be activated in a corresponding move ahead of the Royals' weekend series against the Orioles. Massey has been out all season with a lower-back injury but slashed .382/.417/.706 with two home runs in eight rehab games between Omaha and Double-A Northwest Arkansas. The 26-year-old should share playing time at second base with Adam Frazier once activated.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Beginning assignment Friday
Massey (back) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Friday. Massey has been sidelined since mid-March due to a lower-back strain, but his back has held up well during simulated games at the Royals' spring training complex, and he's now been cleared to resume action in a competitive setting. It's unclear how many games the Royals want the 26-year-old infielder to play in the minors, but a return to Kansas City doesn't seem far away.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Close to rehab assignment
Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Monday that Massey (back) is on track to go on a rehab assignment this week, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Massey was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday after experiencing lower-back tightness at the tail end of spring training. The 26-year-old infielder has since resumed playing in sim games at extended spring training in Arizona, and he appears to be progressing well enough to test himself in an uncontrolled setting this week.... Royals' Michael Massey: Heads to IL
The Royals placed Massey on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a low-back strain. Massey experienced lower-back tightness a little over a week ago and hadn't played in any Cactus League games since March 16, so his move to the IL to begin the season was fully expected. Per MLB.com, Massey has been limited to playing light catch since the injury cropped up, but the Royals still aren't anticipating his stay on the IL to be a lengthy one. He'll remain behind at the Royals' spring facility in Arizona to continue ramping back up and will first be eligible for activation April 4, though it may be a stretch for him to make it back by that date.... Royals' Michael Massey: IL stint expected
Manager Matt Quatraro said Saturday that he expects Massey (back) to begin the season on the injured list, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Lower-back problems have kept Massey out of action since Tuesday, and it appears Massey's absence will extend into the regular season after initially being seen as a day-to-day issue. An IL stint for Massey likely means more playing time at second base for Adam Frazier to begin the year, though Nick Loftin may fill in against left-handed starters.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Remains day-to-day
Royals manager Matt Quatraro said Wednesday that Massey (back) had scans come back fine and is considered day-to-day, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. The 25-year-old was scratched from Tuesday's Cactus League lineup due to back tightness, and it appears the scans confirm that initial diagnosis. Massey is receiving treatment and doing some conditioning Wednesday, and it seems like he could be back on the field within the next few days.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Scratched with back tightness
Massey was scratched from the Royals' spring lineup Tuesday against the Giants due to lower-back tightness, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Massey's removal seems to have been precautionary, though a better idea of the severity of Massey's injury should come once the team's trainers finish evaluating him. The 25-year-old has had a decent spring thus far, recording seven hits in 30 at-bats while hitting two homers and driving in five runs.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Faring well early in spring
Massey has gone 3-for-10 over four Cactus League games. After hitting .229 with a middling .655 OPS across 129 contests in 2023, this is a good start to the spring for Massey. The Royals had an active offseason, and the signing of Adam Frazier -- who is 0-for-6 over three spring games -- could have a negative impact on Massey's playing time, though Frazier can also be an option in the corner outfield. Utility man Nick Loftin could also poach some at-bats at the keystone, especially against left-handed pitchers, so Massey will need to continue his solid spring to avoid losing his spot.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: On bench Friday
Massey is not in the lineup Friday against the Yankees. Massey went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI in Thursday's series finale against the Tigers, but he'll take a seat Friday with the Yankees sending left-hander Carlos Rodon to the bump. Matt Duffy is starting at second base and batting seventh.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Hits two-run shot
Massey went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run in Thursday's loss against the Tigers. Massey jumped on a hanging sinker from Sawyer Gipson-Long in the top of the third inning and sent it into the stands in right field, putting the Royals up 3-0. He later added a single but was left stranded, giving him his sixth multi-hit game this month. The second baseman is now up to 15 home runs on the season, with five of them coming in September.... See More ... See Less -
Royals' Michael Massey: Hits bench versus lefty
Massey isn't in the Royals' lineup Friday against the Astros. With southpaw Framber Valdez set to start on the mound for Houston, the lefty-hitting Massey will retreat to the dugout. Nick Loftin will handle second base for Kansas City and bat sixth.... See More ... See Less

Royals Review@royalsreview7H agoThe Royals are 34-21. After the next 53 games, we hit the July 30 trade deadline. The Royals would likely need to be at least a few games over .500 at that point to be "buyers", let's say 56-52. They would have to go 22-31 (.415) the rest of the way to do at least that.
