Jose Trevino worked as the Yankees' primary backstop in 2022, but his 2023 campaign was derailed by a wrist injury that required season-ending surgery in July. The 31-year-old struggled offensively prior to the injury, with his .569 OPS being 102 points lower than his mark from a year prior. He maintained his elite level of defense, however, which gives him a strong base heading into 2024. Trevino should open the season in the mix behind the plate for New York, but he won't necessarily operate as the primary backstop following the late-season promotion of prospect Austin Wells, who may be the favorite for the job.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Not starting Tuesday

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said in an interview on Jomboy Media's "Talkin' Yanks" podcast that Trevino will not be in the lineup for Tuesday's game versus the Angels. He's started 12 games to Austin Wells' 13 starts at catcher this month, although Wells' start Tuesday will be his fifth in the last seven contests. Wells also holds a slight edge on playing time overall this season, with 30 starts to Trevino's 26 starts.

Trevino (illness) is starting at catcher and batting eighth for Sunday's series finale against the Padres. Trevino missed the first two games of the series due to an illness, but he appears to have recovered and will be back behind home plate Sunday. Trevino is slashing .289/.319/.489 with three home runs and six RBI over 45 at-bats in May.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Remains out Friday

Trevino (illness) isn't in the Yankees' lineup for Friday's game against the Padres. Trevino was pulled from Thursday's game due to an illness, and he seems to still be under the weather heading into Friday's contest. Austin Wells will pick up another start behind the dish and bat eighth while Trevino rests.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Pulled due to illness

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that Trevino was removed from Thursday's game versus the Mariners due to illness, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Trevino was lifted in favor of pinch hitter Austin Wells in the bottom of the eighth inning after going 1-for-3 with a single in his first three plate appearances. Boone expects Trevino to be fine to travel with the team for its road trip beginning this weekend, so consider the catcher day-to-day.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Swats fifth homer

Trevino went 1-for-4 with a solo home run against the White Sox in Saturday's 6-1 victory. Trevino hit one of four homers for New York in the contest, belting a solo shot to left field in the second inning. The backstop is up to five long balls through 91 plate appearances this season, already surpassing the four homers he hit in 158 plate appearances last year. Trevino and Austin Wells continue to split work behind the plate for the Yankees, but Trevino has been far superior offensively so far this season, slashing .286/.330/.464 to Wells' .197/.308/.303 mark.

Trevino went 2-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI in Sunday's win over the Rays. Trevino knocked a two-run shot in the fourth inning and tacked on an insurance run with his solo blast in the eighth. Entering Sunday's game, the veteran catcher had just two home runs through 78 plate appearances this season. He's now slashing .293/.341/.453 with four long balls -- matching his total over 55 games played last season -- and 14 RBI through 26 appearances.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Sitting in second straight

Trevino is not in the lineup for Thursday's game versus the Astros. The Yankees will go with Austin Wells at catcher for the second day in a row after Trevino had caught the previous three contests. The two have shared catching duties pretty close to down the middle this season, with Wells earning 21 starts to Trevino's 18.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Hitting bench Wednesday

Trevino is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Astros. Though he'll give way to Austin Wells behind the plate Wednesday, Trevino appears to be the Yankees' preferred option at catcher for the moment. Trevino started in each of the past three games, with two of those starts coming against right-handers.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Beginning on bench Monday

Trevino is not in the starting lineup for Monday's matchup against Baltimore. Trevino had a big game in New York's 15-5 rout of the Brewers on Sunday, going 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI. However, he's ceding the start behind the plate to Austin Wells on Monday. Trevino has put up far better offensive numbers this season, but Wells continues to get slightly more playing time -- over New York's past eight games, Wells has started behind the plate on five occasions while Trevino has gotten three starts.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Goes deep for team's lone run

Trevino went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Thursday in a loss to the Athletics. Trevino plated an early run for New York with his solo blast in the second inning, but the team's offense did not score again. Still, the homer continued a strong recent stretch of offense by the backstop, as he's built an eight-game hitting streak during which he's batting .423/.464/.654. The hot span hasn't moved Trevino out of a timeshare behind the plate, however -- both he and Austin Wells have played three games over New York's past six contests.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Clubs first homer Sunday

Trevino went 2-for-4 with a solo home run Sunday in an extra-inning loss to Cleveland. Trevino crushed a 406-foot solo shot to center field in the fourth inning to give the Yankees a 4-2 lead. It was both his first long ball and his first extra-base hit of any kind on the campaign. Trevino and Austin Wells have been splitting time behind the plate pretty evenly early in the season, as the former has 29 plate appearances and the latter 34. Neither backstop has hit well, but Trevino has a slightly better slash line at .200/.310/.320 to Wells' .115/.265/.115.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Not starting Friday

Trevino isn't in the Yankees' lineup Friday against the Astros. Trevino got the start as New York's Opening Day catcher with Framber Valdez on the mound for Houston, but he will sit down Friday as Austin Wells starts behind the dish. Trevino and Wells figure to split time behind the plate all season, with the former likely to see most of his action against left-handed starters.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Slated for Opening Day start

Trevino will start behind the plate against the Astros on Thursday, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. While some fantasy managers are excited about the offensive upside of Austin Wells, it will be Trevino behind the plate for the opener in Houston. Trevino is lauded for his work with the pitching staff, and that appears to have given him a slight leg up to begin the season, though it projects to be a fairly even playing-time split in the end with the 24-year-old Wells seeing a good share of the starts against righties. Trevino will be looking for his first career hit against Thursday's starter for the Astros, Framber Valdez (0-for-9 lifetime against the lefty).

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Making spring debut Sunday

Trevino (calf) is starting behind the plate and batting eighth in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against Atlanta, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Recordreports. The 31-year-old has been slowed by a calf strain during spring training but played in a minor-league intrasquad game Saturday and will make his spring debut Sunday. Trevino should ramp up his workload over the next couple weeks and is expected to split catching duties with Austin Wells this season.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Takes live at-bats

Trevino (calf) unofficially went 3-for-5 with a home run in a minor-league intrasquad game Saturday, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. Trevino suffered a calf strain early in camp and hasn't yet been able to get into any major-league exhibition games. However, he said after Saturday's live at-bats that he's "comfortable and confident" with his progress, and he's scheduled to play in a Grapefruit League contest with the big-league squad Sunday. Assuming that goes well, Trevino should be able to ramp up in time to be ready for the start of the regular season, when he's expected to split catching duties with Austin Wells.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Set for spring debut Sunday

Trevino (calf) will make his Grapefruit League debut Sunday against Atlanta, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Trevino tweaked a calf just before the start of camp but has progressed well since then and is finally ready to test his health in a game setting. The veteran catcher is projected to share duties behind the plate this season with Austin Wells.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Could be ready for games soon

Trevino (calf) has been catching live batting practices and bullpen sessions and could be cleared for games soon, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. Trevino ramped up his activities Tuesday and is slated to continue upping the progression for the rest of this week. If he gets through that with no issues, it sounds like he'll be cleared for Grapefruit League contests at that point. Trevino has been slowed by a calf strain he suffered before camp opened.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: Managing calf strain

Manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday that Trevino recently suffered a calf strain and won't be ready for the start of spring training games next weekend, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reports. Trevino said in early February he would enter spring training with no limitations from the wrist surgery he underwent in July, but he then suffered the calf injury within the past couple weeks. The new injury is believed to be a minor issue, with Boone also saying the veteran backstop should be ready for Opening Day, per Chris Kirschner of The Athletic.

  • Yankees' Jose Trevino: No limitations in spring training

Trevino (wrist) said Monday that he will not have any limitations in spring training, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Trevino -- who is more than six months removed from right wrist surgery -- implied that he's able to perform all baseball-related activities without issue. The veteran catcher will enter spring training seemingly behind youngster Austin Wells on the Yankees' catching depth chart, but assuming he's fully healthy, Trevino should still see plenty of work behind the plate in 2024.
