2025 Women's March Madness live scores, updates, NCAA Tournament highlights as first round comes to close

Once again, the lack of competitive games was one of the storylines of the opening round

The first round of the 2025 Women's Basketball NCAA Tournament concluded on Saturday night with Texas and LSU notching wins in dominant fashion.

Most of the top teams took care of business in the first round, but two No. 10 seeds pulled off upsets over No. 7 seeds. Oregon beat Vanderbilt in overtime on Friday, and then South Dakota State took care of Oklahoma State on Saturday afternoon. They are the only double-digit seeds remaining in the tournament. Oregon will face No. 2 seed Duke on Sunday at noon, and that is just one of several interesting matchups of the day. 

No. 4 Kentucky was almost upset by No. 13 Liberty in the first round, so all eyes will be on the Wildcats to see how they bounce back against No. 5 Kansas State. 

Although No. 1 South Carolina is one of the favorites to win the trophy, the Gamecocks can't get too comfortable because No. 9 Indiana almost sent them home during last year's Sweet 16. The rematch is set for 3 p.m. ET.

We also can't forget about TCU star Hailey Van Lith facing her former team when the No. 2 Horned Frogs take on the No. 7 Louisville Cardinals.

No. 4 Ohio State got a 20-point victory over No. 13 Montana State on Friday, but No. 5 Tennessee looked even scarier with a 101-66 win against No. 12 South Florida. Their matchup could be one of the most competitive second-round contests.

Sunday will end with No. 1 overall seed UCLA facing No. 8 seed Richmond. The Spiders gave us one of the most unexpected results of the tournament so far with a dominant 74-49 win over Georgia Tech.

Final: (3) LSU 103, (14) SDSU 48

The Tigers dominated from start to finish with the return of Flau'jae Johnson and Aneesah Morrow. Despite not playing since Feb. 27, Johnson gave a strong performance on both ends of the court. She scored 22 points with four 3-pointers, and was a defensive presence with four steals and two blocks. Meanwhile, Morrow registered her 28th double-double of the season with 12 points and 12 rebounds.

But Kim Mulkey's roster is deeper than those two. As a team, the Tigers shot 50% from the field and went 10 of 18 from beyond the arc. They had six players reach double figures including Mjracle Sheppard and Shayeann Day-Wilson coming off the bench.

The Tigers out rebounded San Diego State 53-31, and they won the battle in the paint 48-22. LSU also picked up 25 points off SDSU's 19 turnovers.

Final: (1) Texas 105, (16) William & Mary 61

The Longhorns overcame a slow start and dominated their first-round matchup while getting out of their offensive slump. Texas had been struggling with productivity on offense, but the team reached the century mark for the second time ever in an NCAA Tournament game. That was achieved thanks to seven players scoring at least nine points, and the team as a whole shooting over 54% from the field.

Sophomore star Madison Booker led the Longhorns with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Kyla Oldracre also gave her team a double-double (15 points, 15 boards) while coming off the bench. Postgame, Booker said the game plan was to get as many points in the paint as they could, and they certainly executed it well by outscoring William & Mary 56-22 in that area.

Final: (6) Florida State 94, (11) George Mason 59

You wouldn't know it by the outcome, but George Mason was starting to make a comeback in the third quarter. But that's when Florida State turned up the heat on both ends of the floor, as the Seminoles outscored the Patriots 31-6 in the fourth.

Ta'Niya Latson scored 28 points for the Seminoles, while teammate Makayla Timpson registered a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Florida State won in a lot of categories, but one of the most impressive stats was a 46-16 advantage in points in the paint. This dominating performance helped Florida State advance to the second round for the first time since 2019.

Final: (8) Illinois 66, (9) Creighton 57

Illinois earned a ticket to the second round for the first time in 25 years. The Blue Jays entered halftime with some momentum, but the Fighting Illini's strong start was difficult for Creighton to overcome.

Illinois had four double-digit scorers led by senior guard Genesis Bryant's 17 points. Kendall Bostic was another key player with 12 points and 17 rebounds -- 14 of those on the defensive end. That was her 54th career double-double, which is a new program record.

Final: (9) Mississippi State 59, (8) Cal 46

Mississippi State earned a ticket to the second round after missing the tournament last year. Madina Okot did a little bit of everything with 14 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and two blocks. 

The Golden Bears extended the fourth quarter as much as they could, but it was hard for them to overcome a rough offensive performance in which they shot just 25% from the field. The Bulldogs didn't shoot the ball particularly well either, but they found their momentum early by winning the first quarter 12-5.

Final: (7) Michigan State 64, (10) Harvard 50

An 11-0 run by the Spartans in the third quarter changed the momentum of the game and now Michigan State is advancing to the second round for the first time in six years. The Spartans were led by Grace VanSlooten, who registered a double-double of 17 points and 10 rebounds. However, the win happened because of a strong team defensive effort. 

Michigan State held Harvard to under 28% from the field, including just 4 of 26 from beyond the arc. Ivy League Player of the Year Harmoni Turner has been one of the most impressive players in the country all season, but her 24 points were not enough to lift her team to victory.

Final: (3) North Carolina 70, (14) Oregon State 49

North Carolina blitzed Oregon State in the third quarter, outscoring the Beavers 30-9, to build a big lead it rode to victory. Lexi Donarski lit it up from deep, knocking down five of her 8 3-point attempts in a 19-point effort. All five of those triples, by the way, came in the third frame. Alyssa Ustby tallied 10 points and nine rebounds, becoming North Carolina's all-time leading rebounder in the process. Kelsey Rees stood out for Oregon State in the loss, as she recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Final: (4) Maryland 82, (13) Norfolk State 69

The final score doesn't tell the full story because Maryland looked in trouble during the first half. However, the Terrapins made adjustments at the break to score 52 points in the last two quarters. They are back in the round of 32 after suffering a first-round loss last year. 

Sarah Te-Biasu had a strong evening with 22 points while going 6 of 8 from beyond the arc. Kaylene Smilke was another top scorer for Maryland with 21 points, including a perfect 9 of 9 from the free throw line -- which is an important stat for Brenda Frese's squad. Maryland is one of the best free throw shooting teams in the nation, and the Terrapins used this to their advantage on Saturday with 23 points from the charity line.

Final: (10) South Dakota State 74, (7) Oklahoma State 68

After being held to just nine points in the second quarter, the Jackrabbits responded by outscoring Oklahoma State 28-19 in the third and then kept that momentum going. The team had four double-digit scorers led by Brooklyn Meyer with nine 19 points. 

A key stat to the game was South Dakota State winning the rebounding battle 47-29. Mesa Byom was responsible for 12 of those. The Jackrabbits are riding a 20-game winning streak to the second round, where they will face No. 2 seed UConn.

Final: (1) USC 71, (16) UNC Greensboro 25

The Trojans overcame a slow start to pick up a dominant win over the Spartans. As JuJu Watkins put it after the game, USC "underperformed a little bit," particularly on the offensive end while shooting around 37% from the field. That being said, the defense was sharp as the Trojans held their opponents to 7 of 54 from the field.

Watkins put up 22 points and eight rebounds while dealing with some discomfort on her left hand and seemingly rolling her ankle in the third quarter. Watkins had gone to the locker room but she checked back in for the fourth. KiKi Iriafen had a slow start and did not get a field goal until three minutes before halftime. However, she till finished the day with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Final: (3) Oklahoma 81, (14) FGCU 58

Oklahoma put its foot to the pedal in the fourth quarter, outscoring FGCU 26-10 in the final frame to put the game out of reach and punch its ticket to the Round of 32. Raegan Beers was a force in the paint, particularly late, as she finished with 25 points, a season-high 18 rebounds and two blocks. FGCU's offensive woes kept an upset win out of reach, as the team shot 23.6% from the field and struggled to match Oklahoma's physicality. The Sooners will battle Iowa in the second round on Monday.

Final: (6) West Virginia 78, (11) Columbia 59

West Virginia is off to the Round of 32 after JJ Quinerly and Jordan Harrison powered the Mountaineers to an impressive win over Columbia. Quinerly and Harrison scored 27 and 23 points, respectively, while Harrison was especially efficient at 9 of 12 from the field. The pair didn't just impress offensively, as they combined for 10 steals -- Quinerly poking away seven of her own -- to disrupt the Lions' offense at every turn. West Virginia will face either North Carolina or Oregon State in the following round.

Final: (2) NC State 75, (15) Vermont 55

NC State led Vermont by only two at halftime, but locked in defensively in the second half to secure a double-digit win and a matchup with either Michigan State or Harvard in Round 2. Zoe Brooks led the Wolfpack in scoring with 19 points, while Saniya Rivers added 15 to go along with 12 rebounds. Vermont's Keira Hanson finished with 21 points and five 3-pointers off the bench, but it wasn't enough to lift her team to a massive upset victory.

Final: (5) Alabama 81, (12) Green Bay 67

Alabama is off to the Round of 32 after pulling away from a tough Green Bay team in the second half. Sarah Ashlee Barker had a tough night offensively (nine points on 4 of 11 shooting), but Aaliyah Nye and Zaay Green picked up the slack with 23 and 22 points, respectively. Nye knocked down four 3-pointers, and in the process set a single-season program record for triples made with 109. Alabama will take on either South Carolina or Indiana in Round 2.

Final: (2) UConn 103, (15) Arkansas State 34

This one was never close, as UConn cruised to a nearly 70-point victory behind dominant performances from Sarah Strong, Azzi Fudd and Ashlynn Shade. Each of the three cleared 20+ points, while Strong added 12 rebounds and Fudd poked away six steals. Oklahoma State or South Dakota State awaits the Huskies in the following round.

Halftime: (1) Texas 50, (16) William & Mary 33

Texas was off to a rough start but found a better rhythm in the second quarter. The Longhorns held their breath for a second when Madison Booker limped off the court to see the trainer. However, she checked back in and is leading the team with 12 points. 

Vic Schaefer's squad has had some lackluster offensive performances recently, but today the team is being more productive in this area. Texas is shooting 52.6% from the field with five players scoring at least seven points so far. One of Texas' strengths has been their dominance in the paint, where they currently lead William & Mary 28-12.

Texas has rough start against William & Mary

Vic Schaefer told his Longhorns ahead of the game that the first five minutes would be important to set the tone. However, Texas only led by five at the end of the first quarter against William & Mary -- a team playing in its first ever NCAA Tournament.

There was also a bit of a scary moment when Madison Booker limped off the court to see the trainers. However, Booker checked back in and it Texas is looking much better in the second quarter. The Longhorns lead 34-20 with 6:59 remaining before halftime. Taylor Jones leads the Texas offense with 9 points while Booker has 8.
