Rafael Nadal, the nine-time winner of the French Open, withdrew from the Grand Slam event Friday because of a left wrist injury.
At a news conference before the third round, Nadal said he would not have tried to compete at any other tournament. He won in straight sets Thursday after getting an injection to dull the pain.
Currently ranked No. 5 in the world, Nadal holds the record at Roland Garros, winning the event in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.
