No. 1 seed Iga Swiatek is the top focus of a jam-packed women's singles draw at the 2024 Australian Open. Play gets underway on Saturday at 7 p.m. ET at Melbourne Park, and it is the first grand slam tournament of the year. Swiatek is a four-time grand slam winner, but she is in search of her first Australian Open title. Elsewhere, the field includes 2023 winner Aryna Sabalenka, two-time Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka, and American standouts Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula.
The latest 2024 Australian Open women's singles odds have Swiatek as the +220 betting favorite. Sabalenka is at +450, Rybakina and Gauff are both +500. Others favored to win the Open include American Jessica Pegula at +2000 and Qinwen Zheng at +2800. Mirra Andreeva, Ons Jabeur and Osaka are all next on the odds board at +3000. Before making any Australian Open 2024 picks, you need to see who tennis expert Jose Onorato is backing.
Onorato grew up playing competitive tennis in Caracas, Venezuela. After coming to the U.S., he trained with famed coach Nick Bollettieri at IMG Academy in Florida and faced players like Robert Farah, now one of the world's top-ranked doubles players. Onorato, who holds dual degrees in finance and economics from the University of Miami, does extensive research before placing any tennis bet. He studies current form, players' tendencies on a particular surface, weather conditions and many other relevant factors. That systematic approach has helped Onorato go 128-90-7 (+69.25 units) since 2022.

Top 2024 Australian Open women's predictions
One surprise: Onorato isn't backing Sabalenka. The 2023 Australian Open champion is certainly capable of winning the tournament, and Sabalenka is the No. 2 seed and No. 2 player in the world. She has 13 career titles, a potentially advantageous draw in the early rounds, and experience at Melbourne Park. Still, the challenges project to pick up for Sabalenka from the fourth round until the end of her run. No. 13 seed Liudmila Samsonova could be a potentially perilous fourth round matchup, and No. 6 seed Jabeur is in line as a potential quarterfinal opponent. Sabalenka has lost to Jabeur twice in grand slam action and, if Sabalenka reaches the semifinals, her opponents could include Gauff or two-time Australian Open winner Osaka.
From there, Rybakina or Swiatek could be waiting. Swiatek is the clear betting favorite in the tournament for a reason, and Rybakina throttled Sabalenka 6-0, 6-3 in the Brisbane International last week. Sabalenka has lost three of her last nine matches, and she has only one tournament win in 15 tries since the 2023 Australian Open.
There is also a different challenge in being the reigning champion, as no player has won back-to-back women's singles titles at the Australian Open since 2010. Sabalenka has proven she is capable by winning last year, but that is her only grand slam title, and Onorato sees better options elsewhere. You can see who to back here.
