The U.S. women's national team defeated Nigeria 2-0 on Wednesday night at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, to close out the Summer a perfect three for three thanks to goals from Christen Press and Lynn Williams.

Head coach Vlatko Andonovski made several rotations to his starting lineup in the final game of the competition, with six changes from the squad that took on Jamaica on June 13. Most notably, Alyssa Naeher returned for Adrianna Franch in goal and Press, meanwhile, earned her third consecutive start. Nigeria, fresh off a wild 3-3 draw against Portugal, featured a starting XI playing out a 5-3-2 formation against the USWNT.

The first half between the two teams was fairly even in shot attempts, though the U.S. had three on target compared to one shot on goal by Nigeria. Despite holding the majority of possession, the attacking third had difficulties finding the breakthrough goal, with two earlier goals disallowed on offside calls.

The momentum in the final third shifted for the home side just before halftime as Press scored the opening goal.

The goal brings Press' career total to 61, breaking a tie with Shannon MacMillan to take sole possession of ninth on the USWNT scoring records.

Press reflected on the record-setting goal after the match:

"It's an honor. You know, I think that there have been so many phenomenal attackers on this team. So to be among the top scorers, it kind of blows my mind. I think about my journey and sometimes how I reflect on my own career and it's hard to believe that I'm here. So I'm very grateful for all the opportunities that I have to play for the national team and I will always keep fighting to score goals."

Second half shift

The U.S. began the second half without immediate substitutions, and continued to try to break down Nigeria's compact and organized shape, with little luck in the final third in the opening 15 minutes of the second half. A late-game substitution from Andonovski proved to be the difference maker as Williams subbed on for Megan Rapinoe and scored the go-ahead goal in stoppage time.

Look ahead

The win marks a three-game sweep for the USWNT during the Summer Series, and extends the teams undefeated streak to 42  games. The team will have two farewell matches ahead of the Tokyo Olympics when they face Mexico in July.
