USWNT vs. Mexico score: Kristie Mewis scores late winner as La Tri miss out on World Cup qualification
The U.S. are now two wins away from also qualifying for the Olympics
The United States women's national team defeated Mexico 1-0 on Monday evening in Monterrey, Mexico. It was the final match of group play at the Concacaf W Championship as Kristie Mewis recorded the game-winner during the 89th minute of play.
The Americans were wasteful for much of the night despite 15 shots and six on frame, getting the wining goal shortly after the hosts went down to 10 players thanks to Lizbeth Ovalle's red card. Her crushing, low tackle on Rose Lavelle was an easy call for the official and gave the Americans the one-player advantage they needed on a night where they were far from their best.
The victory places the USWNT on top of Group A as they enter the semifinals with a perfect 3-0-0 record. The top two teams from each group advance to the 2023 Women's World Cup, and the USWNT, Canada, Costa Rica and Jamaica have each claimed their place in the global tournament hosted in Australia and New Zealand next summer.
The focus for the USWNT now turns towards the knockout rounds. Back-to-back tournament winners and eight-time title holders, there is plenty still at stake. The tournament serves as the qualifiers for the 2023 Women's World Cup, 2024 Olympic Games, and the 2024 W Gold Cup. The team previously faced Costa Rica during Olympic qualifying in February 2020 and defeated Las Ticas 6-0. If the USWNT advance to the final and lose, they will need to compete in a playoff against the winner of the third-place game to secure the final Olympic spot.
