USMNT vs. Jamaica score: Hoppe the hero as striker's header goal sends U.S. to Gold Cup semifinals
The Americans will face Qatar on Thursday
The United States men's national team advanced to the Gold Cup semifinals on Sunday with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Jamaica in the quarterfinals. It was Schalke striker Matthew Hoppe who grabbed the winner, heading home with pace in the 83rd minute for his first international goal.
It was a match where Jamaica were the sharper team for large stretches, but the U.S. improved as the match went on. Despite it not being pretty, they hung in there, competed hard and got the victory to advance to Thursday's semifinal where they will face Qatar.
Jamaica, without star Leon Bailey, had their moments but were wasteful, while also needing goalkeeper Andre Blake to make two big saves on Hoppe to keep things level until late.
Here's the winning goal:
The U.S. finished with 11 shots, outshooting Jamaica by one while also possessing the ball for 68 percent of the match. The Americans were nearly a sure thing in their passing, completing 84 percent, while Jamaica's sloppiness did them in, completing just 63 percent of their passes.
In defense, Miles Robinson stole the show for the U.S., stopping several one-on-ones with perfectly timed tackles against the speed of the Reggae Boyz.
With the win, the U.S. have now made the semifinals in eight straight Gold Cups.
GOAL USA!!! Hoppe!!! He heads home with 8 minutes to go!!
Hoppe gets into the box and takes a bit of a challenge that sends him to the ground, but it isn't a foul. Correct call. Not even close to a foul, and it wasn't in the box, either. USA wanted a penalty, but there was no chance.
Just over 20 minutes to go ... It's getting tense and Jamaica continue to play sharper. Smooth on the ball, enjoying a bit more possession and looking dangerous. The U.S. need some more changes.
Jamaica seeing a bit more of possession now, but still nothing showing for it. Both teams are quite compact in defense and trying to feel each other out.
