It wasn't pretty, but the United States men's national team managed a point on the road in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday, drawing Jamaica 1-1. Tim Weah once again came up big, scoring in the first half to put the U.S. up before Michail Antonio's rocket drew things level before the hour mark. Gregg Berhalter's team had just nine shots on the night, and two on frame, and they won the battle of possession, but Jamaica seemed like the more likely of the two to find a second-half winner. In the end, it's a point that helps the U.S. get a step closer to its dream of qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Here are our player ratings for the USMNT:
Player ratings
Name | Minutes | How did they do? | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
(GK) Zack Steffen | 90 | Some are blaming him for that goal, but I'm not. Who is stopping a shot like that? Did what he needed to do otherwise, which was very little. | 6 |
(DEF) DeAndre Yedlin | 90 | The crosses weren't good, but he did have some well-timed challenges on the right side. Never got going in terms of touching to a teammate and springing forward. | 5 |
(DEF) Walker Zimmerman | 90 | Sturdy and confident in the middle of the defense while also taking care of nearly everything in the air. Didn't even have to make a tackle. Won 75 percent of his aerials. | 6 |
(DEF) Chris Richards | 90 | Got lucky to not give up a penalty kick with a handball in the box, but otherwise he did well. He pressured but sometimes was a bit far from where he should be positioned. Passing was sharp. | 6 |
(DEF) Antonee Robinson | 90 | Did not get to get forward like he would have liked and was shaky at best in defense. Gifted Jamaica what should have been a clear goal but was somehow missed. Passing was awful at times. | 4 |
(MID) Tyler Adams | 90 | Can't blame him all that much on the goal despite marking Antonio. Nobody thought he'd score from there. Otherwise, his passing was on point, but it was more square than up the field. Quiet but helped build forward. | 6 |
(MID) Yunus Musah | 66 | Was nowhere near the quality we saw on Friday, but part of that was the awful pitch conditions. Created one below-average chance, but he was crisp in his passing. | 5 |
(MID) Gianluca Busio | 90 | Received a tough challenge early and from that moment wasn't overly strong on the ball. Had a really nice look on goal early in the second half that went just over. Didn't see as much of the ball as he would have liked in an attacking position. | 5.5 |
(FWD) Brenden Aaronson | 77 | A second quiet game in a row for the RB Salzburg young star. Touched the ball just 24 times and had one shot. Far from a threat, and it was surprising that he wasn't subbed off for Christian Pulisic. Just not his night. | 4 |
(FWD) Ricardo Pepi | 78 | Had one shot blocked inside the box, but he did get an assist and produced another dangerous pass to Weah. Goal drought of over a month. Produced an xG of 0.13 on his two shots. | 5.5 |
(FWD) Tim Weah | 66 | A fantastic effort to score the opening goal, dominating Jamaica's defenders before a tidy finish. Did everything he was asked. Was quiet in the second half but made his mark yet again. | 6.5 |
Substitutes | Replaced | How did they do? | Rating |
Christian Pulisic | Weah (66') | Had 15 touches in 24 minutes, wasn't able to get a shot off and couldn't create anything as Jamaica controlled the second half. | 5 |
Kellyn Acosta | Musah (66') | Came on and was sharp on the few passes he had, and he even created a chance. Needed more time to get into the game though. | 6 |
Paul Arriola | Aaronson (77') | Just four touches in 13 minutes but did have a decent header shot off a wide cross. | 5 |
Jesus Ferreira | Pepi (78') | Had a couple of touches in 12 minutes with no shots. | N/A |
Manager | Subs used | How did the manager do? | |
Gregg Berhalter | 4 | Would have liked to see Pulisic get a bit more time, and I think Acosta should have come on for Busio. He didn't risk it though, and I think a point is solid in the end. | 6 |
