Manchester United vs. Tottenham score: Timo Werner debuts as Spurs frustrate Erik ten Hag's men in draw

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur played out a pulsating 2-2 draw at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday with the Red Devils twice taking the lead before being pegged back by Spurs as the two shared the points. Rasmus Hojlund gave the hosts the lead inside of three minutes when he thumped home after being teed up by Marcus Rashford although that lead only lasted 16 minutes as Richarlison headed home from a Pedro Porro corner.

The England international gave Erik ten Hag's men the lead five minutes before half time when Hojlund returned the favor to re-establish United's advantage but Rodrigo Bentancur scored minutes into the second half from a Timo Werner assist to wipe out that lead. Neither side could find a winning goal but Ange Postecoglou's men will look back on Werner flashing a first half header wide and Cristian Romero heading against the woodwork as moments which could have won them the game.

A draw means that Spurs remain three points behind Aston Villa in third after Unai Emery's men were held to a 0-0 by Everton at Goodison Park while United missed the chance to eat away at the eight-point gap between themselves and the European qualification places. West Ham United, though, can close to within three points of Tottenham if they can win their game in hand when it comes along.

FT: United 2-2 Spurs

It is all over! One point apiece for each side. Hojlund's opener and Rashford's first half strike canceled out by Richarlison and then Bentancur. This was a great game, but no winner in the end at Old Trafford. Tottenham will arguably be happier with the point given United's struggles to get back into European contention. McTominay will regret not taking that late, late headed chance.

Dragusin debut

One of Spurs' two new boys makes his debut as midweek arrival Dragusin comes on for Skipp five minutes after debutant Werner came off for Gil after a decent first showing. Can Postecoglou's late changes swing the game in Tottenham's favor to grab all three points? Five minutes added on to find out.

Still level

Heading towards the final quarter of an hour now and the two sides are still level at 2-2. Although we have had four goals, we want another one or two! This has been a great spectacle and it feels like there could still be a winner left in this one.

On the hour

Still 2-2 on the field and United have opted to make their first change with Scott McTominay coming on for former Spurs man Christian Eriksen. Around 30 minutes left to find another goal in what has been a very entertaining game so far.

United 2-2 Spurs!

That did not take long to deliver once more -- around 50 seconds to be more precise. Werner on his debut tees up Bentancur to equalize and we are all square at Old Trafford once more. What a game! A very neat finish indeed from the Uruguayan, but United's defense needs major work -- they are so easy to score against.

HT: United 2-1 Spurs

What a great first half that was with United taking and then retaking the lead after being pegged back by Spurs who arguably have been the better side so far. Ten Hag's men are undoubtedly more clinical, but Postecoglou's side have created more clear cut chances and enjoyed more of the ball. Romero hitting the woodwork just before the break suggests that there is more to come from this one. Another 45 minutes of similar quality soccer, please!

United 2-1 Spurs!

The hosts lead again. Rashford restores the Red Devils lead! After a neat exchange with Hojlund and some smart footwork, the England international finds the net with a low finish beyond Vicario. Great composure and finish!

Feisty

Things are starting to get chippy with bookings for Wan-Bissaka and Bentancur since the equalizer. Spurs are looking the better side overall and have created more going forward, but there definitely seem to be more goals in this game with the floodgates seemingly ready to open.

United 1-1 Spurs!

There we go. All level against at Old Trafford! Richarlison pulls Tottenham back level. Very poor defending from United allows the Brazilian to nod in from a corner despite the box being packed with players. Onana rooted to the spot but United had to do better. Similar to one of the goals conceded to Villa here on Boxing Day.

How do Spurs react?

The defense has looked a bit suspect so far and Van de Ven alongside Romero looks a bit questionable. A Dragusin debut was not without its risks too, but United have already been forward looking for Hojlund again. That said, Spurs have looked threatening going forward and debutant Werner has already headed wide and also won a corner.

United 1-0 Spurs!

There is your answer! The hosts lead inside of three minutes through Rasmus Hojlund. What a start for the Red Devils in front of Sir Jim Ratcliffe. United moved the ball well from Onana to Fernandes and Rashford eventually teed up Hojlund for thumping finish high into the net. The hosts 1-0 up and Spurs with work to do now that they are down already.

Preview

Two teams going in different directions will meet at Old Trafford on Sunday as Manchester United look to right the ship. With four wins in their last five matches, Tottenham are within a point of a Champions League place but with Yves Bissouma, Pape Sarr and Heung-min Son all on international duty, how they respond in this match could be telling. With Jadon Sancho loaned back to Borussia Dortmund, the Red Devils have started to clean house of players that don't fit Erik ten Hag's system but he still needs to turn their form around.

Defensively, ten Hag misses Harry Maguire after a failed fitness test following a groin injury. Christian Eriksen is back and Antony is available, but all eyes are on Alejandro Garnacho -- the young Argentine has been in strong form scoring five goals and assisting two in all competitions. Garnacho's brace to lead a comeback against Aston Villa was one of the strongest points of his career so far and he needs the rest of the United attack to reach his level of performance.

Cristian Romero returns to the squad from his thigh injury after Mickey van de Ven already appeared in the FA Cup giving Spurs their top defensive pairing just in time for a tough match. It has come too soon for James Maddison while the midfield has turnover as Giovani Lo Celso is also out with a thigh injury. New signing Timo Werner starts while Radu Dragusin might also debut but only from the bench -- both joined the club earlier in the week.
