Manchester City lifted the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday following a 5-4 victory in a penalty shootout as Nemanja Gudelj's take crashed off the crossbar after things ended level 1-1 in regulation. After losing the Community Shield, City have now captured their first trophy of the season, while extending Sevilla's winless streak in the Super Cup to six straight games. Youssef En-Nesyri's first-half goal was canceled out by Cole Palmer to push for the penalty shootout where City were excellent, converting each of their kicks en route to claiming the trophy for the first time in club history. Winning his 39th trophy, Pep Guardiola is now the second-winningest manager in soccer history behind only Alex Ferguson who won 49 during his career.
Playing in the match without Kevin De Bruyne who reinjured his hamstring, City were able to create plenty of chances taking 23 shots but lacked a finishing touch against a disciplined Sevilla side. This isn't unexpected in knockout games, and why Sevilla has played in this competition seven times since 2006. Eventually, no matter how much is thrown at City, they find a way and did just that on short rest in Greece.
Winning a Premier League game last Friday and with another coming in three days against Newcastle United, rotation was needed and City also needed to conserve their energy. Sevilla defended Haaland excellently with the Norwegian only taking one shot, but when it came to the penalty shootout Haaland was as confident as ever.
Josko Gvardiol got his first start in a City shirt in an unfamiliar position at left back and looked a little shaky at times. But that's why you play these games, putting him there and Manuel Akanji in midfield are things that allow Guardiola to find out what his team can do in what is considered a low risk environment.

Without De Bruyne, Guardiola will need players like Palmer to step up this season and it's important to find out who will backup other critical players like John Stones as well. If it wasn't for Yasseine Bounou in net, City could've scored five in the match but it's a normal thing that happens facing one of the best keepers in the world. Building confidence, once Sevilla are able to improve their match fitness they could be a force in La Liga play.

After ending regulation 1-1 we're going straight to a penalty shootout between Manchester City and Sevilla. Cole Palmer and Youssef En-Nesyri were the goal scorers but neither team had anything left to close out the match. With Bounou in net, Sevilla will be a tough out on penalties.
Foden's free kick makes it to Ake in the box but Bounou saves it to lead to a city corner. Four minutes of stoppage time to be played as these teams are running out of energy.
Palmer will leave the match in the 84th minute after scoring the equalizing goal but ALvarez gives City a more dynamic threat to avoid extra time.
At some point, Julian Alvarez will need to come into the match to give Sevilla something else to think about. City are getting the ball around the box but are unable to do much with it while their attacks have been too predictable.
And it's level for City as Cole Palmer scores a header off the underside of the crossbar. After what has been a bad game for City, in a flash they're back level with 25 minutes to go.
Manchester City are begging Sevilla to score a second goal early in the second half. It's almost as if they don't want to play in this game with how slow they've been to the ball. Adjustments will be coming from City before long but they have to come quickly.
Grealish played a great ball into the box but Haaland and Palmer couldn't get onto it for the equalizer. Sevilla's defensive fortitude is causing issues but City's first goal will likely be followed by a few more although they'll have to arrive after halftime.
City were able to win a corner kick via Akanji taking a shot from a space that Haaland usually occupies. But from that City weren't able to open the scoring in the match. It has been slightly predictable early from City with seven minutes left in the half.
Despite Gvardiol starting, Sevilla have been able to create scoring chances during the match. City are slightly frustrated in not being able to breakdown Sevilla but they have won a free kick in a good position.
Against the run of play Sevilla strikes first! It's Youssef En-Nesyri with a header to beat Ederson in net in the 25th minute. City will need to fight back now.
Knocking on the door, this time it's Grealish teeing up a shot. Sevilla has defended well but so much pressure is being heaped onto Bono's net.
Cole Palmer has already put a shot on target as City are growing into the match as it enters the 10th minute of play.
City are on the ball early as expected with Sevilla taking up a defensive shape. Passing has been crisp as expected which makes it quite hard for Sevilla to defend the buildup.
Sevilla will do well to keep this one close but with City rotating a bit, an early goal could unsettle things.
After a campaign where they coupled European glory with flirtations over La Liga relegation, Sevilla began 2023-24 with a disappointing 2-1 loss at home to Valencia and are battling to keep hold of key players as their former recruitment chief Monchi eyes a move to bring Marcos Acuna to Aston Villa.
Sevilla have only won one of their past six appearances in this final while their record against City isn't much better either, four Champions League encounters all ending in defeat by an aggregate scoreline of 12-3.
Guardiola's preparations have been rocked by the hamstring injury that Kevin De Bruyne suffered in the win over Burnley, his first competitive appearance since suffering a similar issue in the Champions League final. City are still assessing whether surgery will be required on the Belgian but their initial assessment was a potential three to four months on the sidelines.
In the medium term, De Bruyne's issue is expected to spur on City's pursuit of West Ham playmaker Lucas Paqueta, a promising swap who could cover in midfield and wide on the right like the Belgian does, but there is no one quite like the 32-year-old when it comes to creating and scoring. For Wednesday night the burden will fall on the likes of Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden -- City are hardly starving out there -- but it's a worrying way to start a season.
Not expected to possess the ball much, Sevilla will be all about the counter attack in the match.
Starters: Bono, Navas, Bade, Gudelj, Acuna, Jordan, Rakitic, Lamela, Torres, Ocampos, En Nesyri
Without Kevin De Bruyne, Manchester City are rolling out more of a traditional 4-2-3-1 with wingers to matchup with Sevilla.
Starters: Ederson, Ake, Gvardiol, Akanji, Walker, Rodri, Kovacic, Grealish, Foden, Palmer, Haaland
We've got Manchester City's European Super Cup Debut against a Sevilla side that has played in the compaction seven times. But despite appearing in it so many times, Sevilla have only won the match once in 2006. The Spanish side has also struggled against Manchester City in European competition but with some rotation in the squad, could this be Sevilla's chance to break their losing streak?
