The crowd unrest which resulted in Paris FC and Olympique Lyonnais' Coupe de France round of 64 clash being abandoned at halftime earlier this month due to fan violence has resulted in the expulsion of both clubs from this season's tournament.

Clashes between attendees, pitch encroachment and the throwing of fireworks meant that the tie was abandoned at 1-1 back on Dec. 17. There was finger pointing from both club presidents following the match after undesirable away fans and lackluster home security were brought into question at Stade Charlety in Paris.

After a French Football Federation (FFF) meeting, Paris FC (a Ligue 2 outfit) have been fined around $11,500 and forced to play five matches away from Stade Charlety, while Ligue 1's Lyon have been hit with a fine of nearly $60,000. On top of that, Lyon have had away fans banned in FFF and Professional Football League (LFP) competition (Ligue 1) until the end of the season and can now only be followed away from home in the UEFA Europa League.

Additionally, Lyon now have a suspended sentence hanging over them for the 2022-23 edition of the Coupe de France with any repeat offenses bringing this punishment into effect with pressure on the government to further strengthen LFP's powers regarding sanctions.

Lyon and OGC Nice have already had points deducted in Ligue 1 this campaign due to fan violence. Nice, who were due to play either Paris FC or OL in the round of 32 in the Coupe de France, will now logically receive a bye. Lyon, meanwhile, are also footing the bill to pay for Stade Charlety damages.

Stadiums across France can only host crowds of up to 5,000 spectators for the next few weeks as the French government seeks to limit the spread of the omicron variant of COVID-19, which is currently ravaging the Premier League festive fixture list.
