Tuesday's scores
- FC Porto 0, Inter 0 (FT)
- Manchester City 7, RB Leipzig 0 (FT)
Inter Milan and Manchester City have now made it to the last eight of Champions League in completely different ways. Erling Haaland's five goals saw him not only become the City record holder for most goals scored in all competitions with 39 but the team rolled to a 7-0 victory (8-1 on aggregate). Haaland became only the third player to ever score five goals in a Champions League match joining Lionel Messi and Luiz Adriano. Inter vs. Porto could've used more goals but Inter didn't need them to advance as a 0-0 draw was enough for them to go through 1-0 on aggregate, becoming the second Italian side to punch their tickets to the last eight, joining AC Milan.
Porto had good chances but Inter's defense held strong as they defended for their lives to reach the last eight. Despite knocking Atletico Madrid out during group stage play, Porto's run for Champions League glory ends in the round of 16.
We're running out of words to describe how good Haaland has been this season but his five goals in the match and 39 goals in all competitions speak for themsevlves. But, how Haaland did it is what's impressive and that includes set play dominance and excellent passing from one Kevin De Bruyne. Haaland may be the player who is most important to City finally winning a Champions League but De Bruyne has a critical role in getting them there.
With excellent deliveries into the box leading to shots from center backs that Haaland cleaned up on, it's easy to forget what De Bruyne did during the game. Until his free kick in the closing moments that is. A special player, the minutes piling up seemed to be impacting De Bruyne lately, but after coming off the bench against Crystal Palace, he made a difference on Tuesday. Only having one goal and one assist doesn't do his impact justice either.
De Bruyne created four chances, took two shots and rattled the bar during the game. Taking seven corners, De Bruyne's specialty was hitting the pass before the assist thanks to aerial dominance from Pep Guardiola's four center backs. It's unorthodox but when a team has the attacking talent to rack up seven goals, defensively you can get creative and Guardiola has done just that.

The final sequence of their match is one of the wildest things that you'll see with Denzel Dumfries clearing the ball off the line, Porto hitting the bar twice and Pepe the wing-back being sent off with a red card. Only needing one goal, Porto racked up an xG of 1.69 on 21 shots compared to 0.49 from Inter. The Italian side never needed to go forward unless Porto scored a goal but playing defensively will only go so far later in Champions League play.
Inter have a striker problem as Lautaro Martinez and Eden Dzeko only had two shots on target between them but it was more than enough thanks to their defensive strength. Defense is something that Inter will need to rely on in later rounds but if the team can't figure out how to score goals, they will only have bigger issues down the line. It plagued them during a 1-0 loss to Bologna and the team seems to run out of attacking ideas late in matches. Can Simone Inzaghi fix that before the games get tougher?
Manchester City showed that the attack can still be feared scoring seven goals in the match. Haaland netted five, Ilkay Gundogan scored one, and Kevin De Bruyne also scored one. The team has now scored 103 goals in all competitions this season. Inter Milan were also able to keep a clean sheet to advance although Porto almost scored at the end. It took a goalline block from Denzel Dumfries and two shots clashing off the post but that was enough to see them through.
It's not the Pepe you're thinking of as this is Pepe the wing back but the result was similar as Porto had to finish with only 10 men on the pitch.
Porto are throwing everything forward and Dumfries had a game saving block before Porto hit the post twice!!!! Hold on as this is some finish in Portugal.
With the last kick of the game he puts City ahead 7-0 putting a cherry ontop of things.
Lukaku has been bright since entering creating a great chance for Martinez but he couldn't get a foot to it.
One goal can close things out for Inter Milan and Lukaku has been the guy providing those lately. He enters the match for Eden Dzeko. Dzeko put in a strong defensive shift but Inter wants one goal on the counter.
Galeno was on the run but eventually loses the ball for an Inter goal kick.
It has been a while since we've had attacks come from this match but Inter are asking the questions at the moment. As things stand, they'll be in the last eight.
He wants every record there is! Haaland's five goals is the joint most that any player has ever scored in a Champions League match.
No player has scored more goals for Manchester City in a season as City are now ahead 5-0 in the match.
City are heading into the last eight in style obliterating RB Leipzig. A little shimmy to open space and then a great finish to take advantage of it.
If they score again in the match, it will be City's 100th goal of the season.
It looks like a Haaland hat trick after Ruben Dias almost hit the ball in on his own. Ahead 3-0 before halftime, this one's over.
A close offside decision on a good Timo Werner chance but RB Leipzig needs a goal soon to get back into this.
Good thing City got ahead early as snow is now falling in Manchester.
Inter are inviting pressure from Porto and Taremi had an excellent chance to put the home side ahead but couldn't even get his shot on target.
It wasn't his best take but City are ahead 1-0 as he knocks in the penalty and before you can blink it's 2-0 City!!!! De Bruyne rattled a shot off the crossbar and Haaland followed it up to knock it in. 77 seconds separated the two goals.
From the ball pinging around, Henrichs gave away a penalty via a hand ball and Haaland will now step up to the spot with a chance to put City ahead.
A team has to be confident when playing out of the back and Inter were anything but as Onana had to clean things up.
It's hard to understand how City hasn't scored yet. Jack Grealish had a chance that he couldn't settle and then four players had shots in the box as the ball pinged around before RB Leipzig eventually cleared it.
City have had 70% of possession and it feels higher as they're asking all of the questions in the early going. RB Leipzig have been pinned back as the CIty attack are pinging the ball around the park and pressing when they lose the ball. Pep Guardiola's instructions are clear to continue attacking as possession is their best defense.
As expected, City are pushing possession early as Gundogan created a chance but RB Leipzig's defense has been strong in the early going.
Evanilson just returned from injury and he's now down and receiving treatment. If he can't go it will be quite a blow for a Porto side that has already been decimated by injuries. Evanilson will try to continue but his fitness will be something to watch.
Two more teams will punch their tickets to the last eight in Champions League today.
Most likely to score a goal: Erling Haaland -- Who else but Haaland can go here. When City need a goal, there's nowhere better to look than their Norwegian marksman. With 33 goals in all competitions, Haaland is so close to averaging a goal per game and he could draw closer to that mark by netting the winner in the match. All Haaland needs is one touch to make things happen. His influence is undeniable.
