Bayer Leverkusen vs. Werder Bremen score: Kai Havertz shows why he's another Bundesliga star
Josh Sargent and company struggled big time on the other side
After a two-month break, Bayer Leverkusen looks to be up to fight for a top-four spot while Werder Bremen is nearing what appears to be an inevitable relegation. Kai Havertz shined once again on Monday, scoring two goals as Leverkusen won 4-1 at lowly Bremen. The win puts Leverkusen within striking distance of the top four while Werder Bremen may need a miracle to escape relegation. Monday's match wrapped up the Bundesliga's three-day return, as the German league became the first major one in Europe to return after the coronavirus pandemic on Saturday.
Here are three takeaways from Leverkusen's win:
Havertz deserves attention, too
You will hear a lot about young Bundesliga talents like Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho, but we would be wrong to not put the 20-year-old Havertz right up there with them. His profile may not be as big since he's at Leverkusen and not at one of the top two clubs, but he continues to show he has Ballon D'Or potential. He scored two more goals for the club in this one, getting his first all-header brace. He has nine goals and seven assists in 14 games, with his club winning 12 of them. Linked with Bayern Munich, Dortmund and other massive clubs, he has future Germany captain written all over him. An attacking midfielder who can also play out wide, his stock continues to rise and is one to watch closely moving forward.
Bremen's defense lacks communication
Werder Bremen has statistically the worst defenses in the league. It showed Monday. That's now 59 goals conceded on the season, four more than the next team with a game less played. There are really no answers. There was no marking on Havertz's headers, the defenders ball watch and lose their marks, and they've have conceded at least two goals in each of their last seven games. If they can't stop the scoring, relegation will be a certainty.
Sargent's future could be up in the air
What is going to come of this season for American Josh Sargent? If Bremen is relegated, will he stay at the club? That could be the right option as he'd probably get minutes, but he's a top-flight player. Whether it's a loan or something else, a move feels likely to happen in order to get more consistent playing time. Talented Americans flock to Germany because they can get minutes early, and Sargent isn't getting the minutes he probably wanted. We have to remember he is just 20 years old and has a bright future ahead, but it's important for him to show what he's got if he wants to be part of Gregg Berhalter's USMNT plans in the fall. Right now, it's not happening.
Bayer Leverkusen 4, Werder Bremen 1 (FT)
⚽ Leverkusen - Kai Havertz (28')
⚽ Bremen - Theodor Selassie (30')
⚽ Leverkusen - Kai Havertz (33')
⚽ Leverkusen - Mitchell Weiser (61')
⚽ Leverkusen - Kerem Demirbay (78')
Four for Leverkusen!
And it's 4-1 now! Kerem Demirbay gets played into the box, and he lofts the ball over the goalkeeper and in. Too easy.
Josh Sargent time
The American comes on in the 71st minute with Bremen needing two goals. Big spot for him here to maybe help save a point.
60' GOAL LEVERKUSEN!
3-1 now to the visitors, and it's another header goal! Diaby does well to lift a ball into the box and it's headed home with authority by Weiser! Werder Bremen is reeling. A potential point is slipping away.
57' Bremen slowly building momentum
The players are trying to pick each other up, but the threat in the run of play just isn't there. A change or two needed for Bremen as Leverkusen looks to get possession and put it away with a third.
51' Strong start for Leverkusen
The visitors look like the most likely to score next. Diaby is having his way down the left and trying to feed Havertz again. Bremen is getting overrun in the middle of the pitch.
Leverkusen one ahead at the break
Havertz is the hero so far with his two headed goals, but Bremen is still in this down 2-1. May we see Josh Sargent in the second half?
