Houston Dash vs. Chicago Red Stars score: NWSL Challenge Cup opener ends in scoreless draw
Houston begins its title defense with a point at home against Chicago in a rematch of last year's Challenge Cup final
Houston Dash and Chicago Red Stars played to a scoreless draw to kick off the 2021 NWSL Challenge Cup on Friday night at BBVA Stadium in Houston, Texas -- a rematch of last year's final in Utah.
The two sides played a choppy first half, struggling to establish tempo and passes looking disjointed when picking out lanes between teammates. Chicago fielded more shot attempts in the first 45 minutes, recording one on target, while Houston had more possession (53 percent) in the early stages. Chicago appeared to control the midfield while Houston's central defenders diffused any dangerous situations.
Chicago switched up their formation to start the second half in a 4-2-3-1 formation in an effort to press a bit higher. The shift provided some offensive looks in the box, though the Red Stars were unable to convert on their opportunities.
Houston's best second half opportunity came on the foot of Veronica Latsko but the play was ruled offside and the goal disallowed.
The teams wound up splitting points as Chicago ultimately edged Houston in possession (51.5%) and outshot the Dash 11 to 3.
Up next for Chicago is its home opener against the Portland Thorns on April 15. Houston will continue its title defense on April 16. You can stream both matches on Paramount+.
