Ryan Callahan: Announces retirement
Callahan officially announced his retirement on social media Wednesday.
Callahan's retirement was more of a formality after he spent the entire 2019-20 campaign on long-term injured reserve. Over the course of his 13-year NHL career, the winger racked up 186 goals and 200 helpers in 757 appearances for the Rangers and Lightning, adding another 39 points in 121 postseason contests.

Senators' Ryan Callahan: Remains in quasi-retirement
Callahan remains on long-term injured reserve, with his contract set to end in July.
Callahan's contract is on Ottawa's books simply to help the team reach the salary floor, and he'll likely announce his retirement on July 1, the day his deal ends. The fact that his Twitter handle still says he's "#24 for the Tampa Bay Lightning" despite being traded to Ottawa four months ago is a pretty obvious sign that he's never going to play in the NHL again.

Senators' Ryan Callahan: Traded to Ottawa
The Lightning traded Callahan (back) and a 2020 fifth-round pick to the Senators in exchange for Mike Condon and a 2020 sixth-round pick Tuesday.
This is nothing more than a salary dump for Tampa Bay. Callahan's playing career has almost certainly come to an end due to a degenerative disc disease of his lumbar spine, so the Senators will simply place him on long-term injured reserve once the regular season gets underway. The veteran forward still has one year remaining on his contract, so he likely won't officially announce his retirement until it expires.

Callahan was considered a candidate for buyout, but it appears he may have already played the last game of his hockey career. The veteran collected just 17 points over 52 games with the Lightning during 2018-19 and officially remains under contract through 2019-20.

Callahan plays the kind of abrasive, physical game that a lot of people believe fits postseason hockey. But he was relegated to the media box a lot this season and flat-out told he was the team's 13th forward in the second half of the year. Changes are likely coming after the Bolts were swept out of the playoffs and Callahan is a likely target. The oft-injured winger has one year left on a deal that pays $5.8 million. The probability of a buyout is much more realistic than a trade.

Not much light has been shed on the nature of Callahan's injury, but it will cost him at least the first two games of the series. Callahan (undisclosed) isn't expected to play against the Blue Jackets on Wednesday for Game 1 of the conference quarterfinals, Joe Smith of The Athletic reports.
It appears that Mathieu Joseph will slot in on the fourth line right wing for the Bolts rather than having the team push Callahan while he continues to deal with the mystery issue. Look for Callahan to be reevaluated ahead of Game 2 on Friday.

He has played in the team's last two games after sitting for the previous three of four and being told by the team he's their 13th forward. Callahan has a year left on a deal that hits the cap at $5.58 million, as well as a modified no movement clause that allows a trade to 15 teams. The Bolts would love to move the lead-footed veteran to free space for a new deal for Brayden Point, so this little bit of production might help. But Callahan could see the press box for the foreseeable future.

Callahan's ice time dropped to 7:56 against the Maple Leafs on Thursday.
He has only played more than 10 minutes a night three times in 10 games since his return on Dec. 22 from an upper-body injury. And he has missed a few games this month to the same malady. Callahan has four points in those 10 games, but he's averaged less than nine minutes of ice time when his average prior to the injury was 12-15. Callahan may not be fully healthy, and while his leadership is strong, there's no fantasy value here.
