Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Helpers in consecutive contests
Burns notched an assist and five shots on goal in Saturday's 4-1 win over the Kraken.
After starting the season quiet, Burns has a helper in each of the last two games. He's added 17 shots on net, 11 blocked shots and an even plus-minus rating through seven appearances. Burns continues to see heavy usage at even strength, which gives him plenty of opportunities to build some momentum on offense.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Earns first point of season
Burns logged an assist and two shots on goal in Thursday's 4-2 win over the Flames.
Burns has maintained his usual top-four role this season, albeit with less power-play time after the Hurricanes brought in Shayne Gostisbehere to quarterback the top unit. The 39-year-old Burns has been less effective -- his helper was his first point through six games, and he's added just 12 shots on net, 11 blocked shots and a minus-1 rating even with the Hurricanes off to a 4-2-0 start. Even in a down year, he had 43 points over 82 regular-season outings in 2023-24, but given his age, the bottom could fall out at any moment, so he's a risky fantasy play.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Generates assist
Burns logged an assist, three shots on goal, two blocked shots and two PIM in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Rangers in Game 4.
Burns has three helpers over his last five contests. Through nine playoff outings, the veteran defenseman has produced four points, 22 shots on net, 15 blocks, six hits and a plus-5 rating. The 39-year-old remains on the top pairing and still sees a healthy amount of power-play time despite an increased role their for Brady Skjei.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Puts up helper in loss
Burns logged an assist, two shots on goal, two blocked shots and a plus-2 rating in Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Rangers in Game 1.
Burns has a helper in consecutive contests, and he's up to three points through six playoff contests. The 39-year-old defenseman has added 12 shots on net, 11 blocked shots and a plus-5 rating this postseason. He's still taking on massive minutes in a top-four role, so Burns should be capable of adding respectable scoring numbers during the playoffs.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Opens scoring in Game 3
Burns scored a goal on his lone shot in Thursday's 3-2 Game 3 win over the Islanders
Burns opened the scoring 4:48 into the first period, firing a puck from the point that glanced off an Islanders' defender and past Ilya Sorokin. It's the first point of the postseason for Burns, whose last goal came March 10. The 39-year-old blueliner had 10 goals and 33 points in 82 regular-season games.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Snags power-play helper
Burns logged a power-play assist and three shots on goal in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Blackhawks.
Burns set up the second of Seth Jarvis' two goals in the third period, which was the game-winner. Burns has slowed down on offense lately with just two helpers over his last nine outings. The 39-year-old is on track for another ironman campaign with 10 goals, 31 assists, 19 power-play points, 185 shots on net, 87 blocked shots and a plus-20 rating through 81 appearances. Assuming Burns plays Tuesday in Columbus, he will complete a 10th straight season without missing a game.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Chips in on PP Friday
Burns notched a power-play assist on six shots in Friday's 4-2 win over the Capitals.
With 40 points (10 goals, 30 assists) in 77 games, Burns' offensive production has regressed badly following the 61 points he produced last season. He continues to see solid minutes as part of the Canes' top defensive unit (21:40 average TOI, including 2:39 on the power play), but the 38-year-old defender isn't capable of producing the 70-plus point seasons he did back in his heyday. Manage your expectations accordingly.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Two helpers Saturday
Burns recorded a pair of assists, two hits, a blocked shot and one shot on goal in Saturday's 5-4 shootout win over the Maple Leafs.
Now with just 35 points in 67 games, Burns is having an off-year following his 61-point season in 2022-23. It may be that Father Time has finally caught up with the 38-year-old blueliner, who is now in his 19th NHL season. For now, he continues to see healthy minutes with an average TOI of 21:48, although this represents a decline from his previous two seasons (23:13 and 26:08, respectively).

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Strikes on power play
Burns scored a power-play goal in Monday's 6-3 win over the Blackhawks.
Burns had gone 15 games without a goal and four contests without a point before tallying in the third period Monday. The 38-year-old defenseman hasn't had the same level of scoring dominance this year as he's had in past years -- he's at nine goals and 31 points through 55 outings. Burns has added 135 shots on net, 51 blocked shots and a plus-15 rating, and while his offense is down, he's still seeing top-four minutes.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Two helpers in Thursday's win
Burns delivered two assists, one on the power play, in Thursday's 5-2 win over the Avalanche.
The veteran blueliner had a hand in a Martin Necas tally in the first period and a Michael Bunting strike in the second. Burns has found the scoresheet in three straight games, and since the calendar flipped to 2024 he's produced two goals and 11 points in 13 games, with half of that offense (one goal and five helpers) coming on the power play.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Registers PP helper Saturday
Burns generated a power-play assist in Saturday's 3-1 win over the Coyotes.
Burns is now up to 27 points (8G, 19A) in 48 games, putting him on pace for about a 45-point season. The days of getting 70-80 points out of Burns are gone, but he's still a decent blueliner for fantasy purposes. He's currently averaging about 21 minutes per game skating on the Canes' top defensive pairing opposite Jaccob Slavin.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Three-point night Friday
Burns scored two goals, one on the power play, and added a power-play assist in Friday's 6-2 win over the Capitals.
The veteran blueliner kicked off a comeback from a 2-0 deficit early in the second period, sneaking in off the point and tapping home a slick feed from Andrei Svechnikov. Burns flipped the switch after Christmas -- he has three multi-point performances in the last five games, racking up three goals and nine points over that stretch, to break out of a slump that had seen him manage just two helpers over his prior 11 contests.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Three helpers against Habs
Burns collected three assists with one shot on net, two blocked shots and a plus-3 rating in Thursday's 5-3 win over the Canadiens.
The three points were a season high for the veteran blueliner. Burns was quiet through most of December, managing just two points (both helpers) over the 11 games prior to Christmas, but the holiday break seems to have done him good -- he's broken out for a goal and five points in the last two contests. On the season, Burns has six goals and 19 points through 36 games.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Adds two points in win
Burns notched a goal and an assist in Wednesday's 5-2 victory over the Predators.
Both of Burns' points came on the man advantage, setting up Sebastian Aho's opening tally in the first period before adding a goal later in the frame, beating Juuse Saros with a wrist shot through traffic. It'd been a quiet month for Burns offensively -- he had just two assists in his previous 11 games. Overall, the 38-year-old blueliner is up to six goals and 16 points through 35 games this season.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Slings helper in loss
Burns logged an assist in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Canucks.
Burns snapped a three-game point drought with the helper. He's been limited to four assists over his last nine outings. The Hurricanes' inconsistency isn't helping his game, but it's also very possible the 38-year-old's age is catching up with his ability to be a force on offense. He's racked up a solid 13 points, 63 shots on net, 25 blocked shots and a plus-8 rating through 27 outings, but he'll be hard-pressed to match the 18-goal, 61-point campaign he recorded last season.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Hits major career milestone
Burns had two assists in a 6-2 win over Buffalo on Saturday.
Burns now has 600 career helpers in the NHL. He's the 17th defender in league history, and only active defender, to hit that milestone. Burns has 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 23 games, which puts him into the NHL's top-40 scorers from the blue line. He's off his 61-point pace from last season, which could be a sign of age-related decline, but he stands a chance to get back on track if he continues to pile up shots.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Five shots in win
Burns recorded five shots on goal to go along with two blocked shots in Tuesday's 4-1 win over the Flyers.
The six-time All-Star has hit his stride in the past six games, recording two goals and one assist. Burns has also registered 16 shots on goal in this span to go along with eight blocked shots. The 38-year-old is still playing heavy minutes -- he's averaging 20:30 of ice time over the last six contests. He should continue to skate on the first pairing alongside Jaccob Slavin while quarterbacking the top power-play unit.

Hurricanes' Brent Burns: Snaps eight-game point drought
Burns had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win Saturday over Tampa Bay.
The points snapped an eight-game point drought. The goal was a big one -- it was Burns' 248th NHL goal, which pushed him past Hall of Famer Brian Leetch for ninth on the league's all-time goals list for defensemen. Burns has just six points (three goals, three assists) in 15 games this season, which is a big drop from his 61-point total from last year. It's unclear if the drop is age-related, a complete fluke or the wear-and-tear from 1,348 regular season games and another 109 in the postseason. It could be worth monitoring, though.
