  • Ducks' John Gibson: Takes first loss in overtime

Gibson yielded three goals on 32 shots in Friday's 3-2 overtime loss to the Sabres. Gibson started consecutive games for the first time this season, but it ended up resulting in his first defeat. The 31-year-old couldn't protect a 2-0 lead, letting the Sabres pull even late in the second period before giving up a goal to Jiri Kulich on a rebound in overtime. Gibson is now 3-0-1 with a 2.70 GAA and a .906 save percentage over four appearances. Lukas Dostal has played too well to be completely relegated to the backup role -- expect the Ducks to operate a timeshare in the crease when both Gibson and Dostal are healthy. The team's next game is Monday versus the Kraken.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: First goalie off ice Friday

Gibson was the first goaltender off the ice at morning skate, per Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News, indicating he will patrol the home crease versus Buffalo on Friday. Gibson will make his second straight start and fourth in the last six games. He missed the first month of the season recovering from an appendectomy before returning to action Nov. 10 against the Blue Jackets. The veteran netminder is 3-0-0 and has given up eight goals on 85 shots (.906 save percentage) since returning to full health. Gibson will face the Sabres, who are averaging 3.21 goals per game.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Earns third win

Gibson stopped 18 of 20 shots in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Blackhawks. The Blackhawks weren't able to get much going on offense outside of a pair of Jason Dickinson goals. Gibson faced his lightest workload of the season to earn his third straight win, and he's allowed a total of eight goals on 85 shots so far. The 31-year-old netminder has alternated started with Lukas Dostal since Gibson was activated from injured reserve, and that pattern seems likely to continue. It could benefit both netminders by helping them avoid being overworked. The Ducks' next two games are at home -- they play the Sabres on Friday and the Kraken on Monday.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Starting in Chicago

Gibson will guard the road goal versus the Blackhawks on Tuesday, Greg Boysen of CHGO Sports reports. Gibson will get the second half of a back-to-back after Lukas Dostal picked up a 4-2 win over the Stars on Monday. Through two starts this season, Gibson has been solid, winning both outings while allowing six goals on 65 shots. The Blackhawks are a soft matchup, but the Ducks don't tend to score a lot either, so they could struggle to offer sufficient support.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Allows four goals in win

Gibson gave up four goals on 25 shots in Friday's 6-4 win over the Red Wings. Gibson has won both of his starts since returning from an appendectomy, but this wasn't a pretty effort. The Red Wings' power play converted three times, and it took a strong third period for the Ducks to pull off a comeback. With Lukas Dostal struggling recently, Gibson has a chance to stake his claim to at least a timeshare role. The Ducks' next two games are on the road with stops in Dallas on Monday and Chicago on Tuesday -- whichever goalie starts the latter game will be a strong streaming option.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Taking on Detroit

Gibson will get the starting nod at home versus Detroit on Friday, Derek Lee of The Hockey News reports. Gibson made his season debut Sunday after missing the first month of the season recovering from an appendectomy. He made 38 saves in a 4-2 win over Columbus, and after getting Wednesday night off, he will once again get the start in goal. The Red Wings are having trouble lighting the lamp, as they are averaging only 2.47 goals per game this season.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Wins season debut

Gibson stopped 38 of 40 shots in Sunday's 4-2 win over the Blue Jackets. Gibson missed all of the preseason and the first month of the regular season while recovering from an appendectomy. He looked great in his return, though the Ducks' defense didn't make his job any easier. Gibson is no stranger to heavy workloads -- over the last three seasons, the Ducks are tied for the most shots against per game at 35.0, and they're giving up slightly more (35.3) per game to begin 2024-25. Lukas Dostal has handled a starter's workload in Gibson's absence, but this could very well turn into a timeshare, which might yield the best results for both goalies. James Reimer is also on the roster, and the Ducks are under no pressure to waive him until they need an extra skater, as they are far closer to the cap floor than the ceiling. A clearer picture of Anaheim's goaltending plans could come this week as they host the Golden Knights on Wednesday and the Red Wings on Friday.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Making first start of season

Gibson will be between the pipes for Sunday home's matchup versus Columbus, Derek Lee of The Hockey News relays. Gibson will make his first appearance of the 2024-25 campaign Sunday after undergoing an appendectomy in September. The 31-year-old could push James Reimer out of the goaltender rotation now that the former is healthy. Gibson went 13-27-2 with an .888 save percentage and a 3.54 GAA over 46 regular-season outings in 2023-24.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Lifted from IR

Gibson (abdomen) has been removed from injured reserve ahead of Friday's game versus the Wild, per the NHL media site. Lukas Dostal was already confirmed to start in goal, but Gibson is eligible to dress as the backup. The 31-year-old Gibson missed the first month of the season while recovering from an appendectomy. Dostal has played well in his absence, so Gibson is unlikely to see the same kind of workload he's been able to earn in previous seasons.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Expected to travel with team

Head coach Greg Cronin said Monday that he anticipates Gibson (abdomen) accompanying the Ducks on their upcoming road trip, which begins Saturday against the Rangers, Derek Lee of The Hockey News reports. Gibson has missed the first few weeks of the regular season while recovering from an appendectomy, but he appears to be closing in on a return. While it's not yet clear when he could be back in game action, it's encouraging that he'll travel with the team for the upcoming four-game road trip. Once Gibson is able to return, he'll likely compete with Lukas Dostal for the starting goaltender job.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Placed on IR

Gibson (abdomen) was designated for injured reserve Monday. Gibson was facing an absence of 3-6 weeks, so the fact that he was placed on IR shouldn't come as a surprise. Without a veteran netminder on the roster, the Ducks claimed James Reimer off waivers Monday. Once cleared to play, Gibson will compete with Lukas Dostal for the starting job.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Might miss Opening Night

Gibson underwent an appendectomy Wednesday and will miss the next 3-6 weeks, the team announced Thursday. Gibson had been practicing with the Ducks during training camp but didn't get into a preseason contest. He had a 13-27-2 record, 3.54 GAA and .888 save percentage in 46 games last season. Lukas Dostal might have gotten the start Opening Night regardless of Gibson's availability, but Dostal will be leaned on heavily while Gibson is out. While the 31-year-old Gibson is recovering, Oscar Dansk will likely serve as the No. 2 goaltender.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Gives up six goals

Gibson allowed six goals on 27 shots in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Flames. The Ducks were all-around awful over the first two periods, and a rally in the third wasn't quite enough to bail out Gibson's poor play. The 30-year-old hadn't played over the previous five contests, but the time off due to an upper-body injury didn't help him shake his losing streak, which is now at seven games with a 5.61 GAA and an .836 save percentage in that span. Overall, Gibson has gone 13-27-2 with a 3.54 GAA and an .888 save percentage through 46 appearances in what has been a fifth consecutive disappointing campaign. Lukas Dostal is likely to start Saturday in Los Angeles, and it's unclear which goalie will get the nod for the season finale in Vegas on Thursday.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Expected to start Friday

Gibson (upper body) will start in Friday's home tilt versus Calgary, according to Alyson Lozoff of Bally Sports West. Gibson is making his first appearance since March 30. He stopped 31 of 37 shots en route to a 6-1 loss to Edmonton in that contest. That defeat was the latest setback in what's been a challenging campaign for the 30-year-old goaltender -- he has a 13-26-2 record, 3.48 GAA and .890 save percentage across 45 appearances. The Flames might be a somewhat favorable matchup, though. Calgary ranks 20th offensively with 3.01 goals per game.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Not suiting up Tuesday

Gibson (upper body) won't dress for Tuesday's game versus the Kings, Derek Lee of The Sporting Tribune reports. Gibson was expected to serve as backup, but he instead will fully rest again. Lukas Dostal will start and Alex Stalock will be the backup for at least one more game.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Serving as backup Tuesday

Gibson (undisclosed) will serve as Lukas Dostal's backup Tuesday at home against the Kings, per Derek Lee of The Sporting Tribune. Gibson hasn't had the best season, registering an .890 save percentage and a 13-26-2 record. The 30-year-old has been with the Ducks his whole career, but he's been the subject of trade rumors over the past few seasons. He will be entering his 11th season in the NHL in 2024-25.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Remains out Sunday

Gibson (undisclosed) will not dress Sunday against the Blues. Gibson has now missed the last four games with a mystery injury. He's on a six-game losing streak, registering an ugly 5.54 GAA during that span. His next chance to play will be Tuesday against the Kings.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Out against Seattle

Gibson (undisclosed) will not be available Friday against the Kraken, Derek Lee of The Sporting Tribune reports. Gibson was not expected to start Friday anyway, but now Alex Stalock will serve as Lukas Dostal's backup versus Seattle. Gibson went 0-6-0 with a brutal 5.54 GAA in March and hasn't won a game since Feb. 29. His status for Sunday's tilt with the Blues is uncertain.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: Not starting after all

Gibson, contrary to previous reports, will not get the starting nod against Calgary on the road Tuesday. Instead, Lukas Dostal will be between the pipes, per Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan. Based on the Ducks' goalie rotation, Gibson was in line to start, but it seems his six-game losing streak has changed the team's mind about which direction to go. Still, the veteran goaltender should see plenty of work the rest of the way even if Dostal takes a slight edge in actual starts.

  • Ducks' John Gibson: In goal Tuesday

Gibson will get the starting nod on the road against the Flames on Tuesday, Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 The Fan reports. Gibson is mired in a six-game losing streak during which he posted a 5.54 GAA and an .844 save percentage. The veteran netminder continues to split the workload with Lukas Dostal despite the slump -- a trend that should continue over the final few weeks of the season.
