The Edmonton Oilers and their fans are holding their breaths Tuesday night as prized rookie Connor McDavid went down with an apparent injury against the Flyers.

UPDATE: Head coach Todd McLellan said McDavid will be out long-term with an upper-body injury.

This injury will interrupt what had been one of the most anticipated rookie seasons since Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin arrived simultaneously in 2005-06.

McDavid, the 18-year-old phenom Edmonton selected first overall in June, slammed into the boards in a scary collision. His arm was positioned awkwardly and it looks like he jammed his left shoulder. McDavid immediately left the game and was favoring his left arm.

Here's a look at the play from multiple angles:

Even if the Oilers aren’t expected to contend for a playoff spot this year, losing McDavid would be a disaster.

He entered Tuesday second on the club with 12 points, has been getting into an incredible rhythm with linemates Benoit Pouliot and Nail Yakupov, was just named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month and is making sure the team continues putting fans in the seats in their final season in Rexall Place. The club is also already without Jordan Eberle, who was injured in the preseason.

This is not what anyone wants to see for the highly-anticipated youngster. McDavid currently leads all rookies with 12 points.
