For all the criticism he gets, Marc-Andre Fleury has always had the ability to make those spectacular saves you need your No. 1 to make over the years. He had one of his all-time best against the Ottawa Senators Monday night.
With the game tied 1-1 midway through the third period, the Senators got a great chance when Erik Karlsson and Clarke MacArthur completed a perfect give-and-go play. As Karlsson found the open area of the ice, MacArthur put the puck on his tape with almost the whole net to shoot at.
Fleury lunged at the last second and the puck disappeared into his glove. Watching the reverse angle of the replay, Fleury actually wasn’t all that quick to get over to Karlsson’s shot. With Karlsson settling the puck and trying to get the perfect shot away, Fleury was able to spot the shot and make that last-ditch effort to nab it.
He didn’t rob some call-up from Binghamton, either. That’s one of the game’s elite offensive talents taking that shot. It may have also been a game-saving stop. The Penguins went on to win the game 2-1 in overtime.
There have been a lot of great saves this year, but this is an easy candidate in the category of Best Save of the Year, Glove.
