If there’s one thing NHL teams have been learning over the last few years is that when it comes to jerseys, most of these teams had it right the first time. Nothing beats a classic and that’s what the Washington Capitals are bringing back with their "new" third jerseys for the 2015-16 season.

The Caps unveiled their new thirds Tuesday at the NHL Awards media day. The jersey bears a close resemblance to the red jerseys the team wore from 1974-75 through 1994-95. The Caps had been wearing a white third jersey that was essentially a throwback since 2011. This new red jersey will be replacing that one.

The current Caps' primary jerseys are fine, of course. They were wise to bring back a version of the original wordmark the team wore for its first 20 years before getting sucked into the mid-1990s redesigns most teams fell into.

The throwbacks are just better. These look a little more dated than the white ones the team wore on the road this year, but they're still pretty great.

Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s the value of simplicity. The fact is, for most NHL teams, there was nothing wrong with what they started with. These latest Caps jerseys appear to prove that point once again.
