Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Michael Del Zotto is incredibly lucky after he caught Avs forward Daniel Briere’s skate in the neck in Wednesday night’s game against the Colorado Avalanche. The injury occurred just 29 seconds into Del Zotto’s first shift since being out of the lineup for three weeks. Not exactly the best way to be welcomed back, obviously.

Del Zotto required many stitches to close the gash in his neck, but considering the location of the cut, this could have been so much worse as he was gashed very near the jugular vein.  That very easily could have ended up as a life-threatening injury.

The 25-year-old defenseman eventually returned to the game and finished the contest with 11:36 of ice time.

On Tuesday morning, Del Zotto shared a photo of the gruesome cut and the post-repair zippers he’s got going now.

What a way indeed. Here’s the image from his Instagram account. WARNING: Turn away if you’re squeamish about blood.

Del Zotto appears to be in good spirits, but again, he is so very lucky that wasn't much, much worse.
