Scott Gomez is back with the team that saw him play his best hockey in the NHL.

The New Jersey Devils signed Gomez to a 1-year contract, the team announced Monday morning. Financial terms were not disclosed. Gomez spent last season with the Florida Panthers, scoring two goals with 10 assists in 46 games.

"He does have skills, he knows the system, he's been practicing and we'll see how it goes," Devils general manager Lou Lamiorello said.

Originally a first-round draft pick by the Devils in 1998, Gomez spent the first seven years of his career with New Jersey and recorded 450 points in 548 games. During his prime years he was one of the better playmakers in the NHL and even led the NHL in assists with 56 during the 2003-04 season.

Following his time with the Devils, Gomez signed a huge contract with the New York Rangers before the 2007-08 season and turned out to be just one in a long line of poor free agent investments. The Rangers were able to salvage the deal two years later by trading Gomez to the Montreal Canadiens in a deal that sent Ryan McDonagh to New York.

Since then Gomez has spent time with the San Jose Sharks and Panthers as his offensive game has steadily regressed. He has scored just 13 goals in his past 203 NHL games.

The Devils are currently dealing with some injury issues up front and will be without forwards Travis Zajac and Martin Havlat on Tuesday night against Pittsburgh.
