2024 NHL All-Star Game score: Team Matthews surges by Team McDavid to win 3-on-3 tournament, $1 million prize
All-Star Game MVP Auston Matthews scored three points to lead his team to victory in Toronto
Team Matthews has defended home turf and won the 2024 NHL All-Star Game in Toronto. Auston Matthews and his team took down Team McDavid, 7-4, to win the $1 million in prize money.
Much like the two semifinal games, this one was evenly matched with the teams exchanging blows for most of the contest. Things really heated up when the teams combined to score three goals in 20 seconds late in the first period.
Among that trio of tallies was Matthews, the Maple Leafs superstar, potting his first of the game.
This weekend can sometimes make goalies look bad, but Team McDavid netminder Sergei Bobrovsky deserves some credit for making a show-stopping save at the first period buzzer. Even Mitch Marner had to tip his cap.
The championship game was tied at 3-3 going into the second period, but that is when Matthews and his side started to pull away. Filip Forsberg broke the tie by picking his spot off the rush.
Not too long after that, Matthews scored what would wind up being the game-winning goal to put the cherry on top of an awesome performance at Scotiabank Arena. Matthews took a feed and blasted a one-timer over the shoulder of Connor Hellebuyck, a perennial Vezina Trophy candidate.
From there, Team Matthews was able to hang on for the win, and they didn't even need to go to a shootout. In a not-so-shocking twist of events, Matthews himself was named All-Star Game MVP after a three-point performance in the final.
Matthews and his teammates get to give $1 million to the charity of their choice, and the Maple Leafs fans will go home happy.
Semifinal: Team Matthews vs. Team Hughes
The game between Team Matthews and Team Hughes started and ended with a frenzy of goals. The teams combined for four goals in the first five minutes of the game, including Frank Vatrano picking the corner for Team Hughes.
The scoring slowed a bit after that with no goals in the next seven minutes of game time, but the players turned up the intensity late. That began when Mitch Marner walked down main street and potted a great shot to get the Maple Leafs fans going.
There were three lead changes in the final eight minutes of the second period, and Team Hughes held a late lead thanks to a pretty finish from Vatrano again.
Just 33 seconds after that, Filip Forsberg finished a filthy deke that sent the game to a shootout.
Igor Shesterkin and Thatcher Demko elevated their level of play in the shootout with both players denying the first three shooters they faced. However, it was Demko who blinked first when Alex DeBrincat buried a shot to the far side.
Semifinal: Team McDavid vs. Team MacKinnon
In the first semifinal matchup, Team McDavid defeated Team MacKinnon, 4-3, in a game that required a fantastic comeback from McDavid's side.
As the team captain, Connor McDavid and his side got off to a slow start. Nathan MacKinnon opened the scoring and had what looked like a dagger late when he scored a gorgeous goal against Sergei Bobrovsky. Despite the result, this might wind up being the goal of the day.
Team McDavid was down 3-1 with under a minute left when they finally kicked it into high gear, and David Pastrnak sparked the comeback with a snipe against Boston Bruins teammate Jeremy Swayman.
Team McDavid still needed one more, and McDavid came through for his team with just six seconds remaining. Team MacKinnon made the interesting defensive decision of leaving McDavid all alone, and he did not miss an empty net.
McDavid and Pastrnak, the heroes at the end of regulation, also scored in the shootout to win the game and send Team McDavid to the championship game.
Fittingly, hometown hero Auston Matthews is named All-Star Game MVP after tallying two goals and an assist in the final. There may have been some bias in that selection, but I think we can let it slide considering the locale of this event.
Final: Team Matthews 7, Team McDavid 4
Auston Matthews and his Maple Leafs teammates give the home crowd something to celebrate. Matthews found the back of the net twice in the final, and he delivers a win in Toronto to cap off an entertaining All-Star Weekend.
Team Matthews 7, Team McDavid 4
Mat Barzal cashes in on a 2-on-2 with Alex DeBrincat, and that should be the dagger. It looks like Team Matthews is going to take home the win in front of the home crowd.
Team Matthews 6, Team McDavid 4
Alex DeBrincat hits the empty net to give Team Matthews a 6-3 lead, but Tomas Hertl comes right back to give Team McDavid a little life with 1:26 left in regulation.
Team Matthews 5, Team McDavid 3
Auston Matthews lets a bomb fly on a 2-on-1 that beats Connor Hellebuyck in the top right corner. That should spark the crowd, and Team Matthews has its first multi-goal lead of the day.
Team Matthews 4, Team McDavid 3
Team McDavid leaves Filip Forsberg all alone coming in off the rush, and he picks his spot on division rival Connor Hellebuyck to break the tie once again. That's Forsberg's third of the day, and he is putting on a show.
Bobrovsky ends the first period by robbing Mitch Marner with the blocker for the best save of the weekend. These games may not be easy on goalies, but Bobrovsky got to show off his athleticism there.
Team Matthews 3, Team McDavid 3
Oh boy, the goals are coming fast and furious now. McDavid wheeled around the net and found his favorite target, Leon Draisaitl, wide open in front of the net for a tap-in goal. The pace has picked up a lot in the last two minutes.
Team Matthews 3, Team McDavid 2
Five seconds after Pastrnak tied the game, Clayton Keller springs Auston Matthews on a break, and he shelfs one under the crossbar for a tally. Matthews has put his team ahead again.
Team Matthews 2, Team McDavid 2
Right off an offensive zone face-off, David Pastrnak gathers the puck and whips a shot through the wickets of Igor Shesterkin.
Team Matthews 2, Team McDavid 1
William Nylander's shot squeaks through Bobrovsky's legs, and Mitch Marner is there to poke it home. The two hometown heroes combine forces to give their team the lead for the second time in this game.
Team Matthews 1, Team McDavid 1
Boone Jenner has his second of the day as he absolutely rips a wrist shot over the shoulder of Igor Shesterkin to tie the game. Jenner, the 11-year veteran playing in his first All-Star Game, is playing quite well.
igor Shesterkin, who has had an uneven start to the 2023-24 season, just slid side-to-side to rob McDavid of a one-timer goal on a pass from Leon Draisaitl.
Team Matthews 1, Team McDavid 0
Clayton Keller punches one home to give Team Matthews the early lead. Auston Matthews slid a pass across, and Keller was just able to sneak it past Sergei Bobrovsky for the tally.
The championship game between Team Matthews and Team McDavid is underway. Celebrity captains Justin Bieber and Will Arnett are also fighting for bragging rights.
Following a performance from Tate McRae, Team Matthews and Team McDavid will play for a million dollars in prize money. Both semifinal games went to a shootout, and if that is a sign of things to come, this final clash should come down to the wire.
