Saints' Derek Carr: Expected to return Week 9
Saints head coach Dennis Allen said Monday he expects Carr (oblique) to return to the starting lineup for Sunday's divisional contest against the Panthers, Ross Jackson of WWL Louisiana reports.
Carr has missed three straight games due to a left oblique injury, but Allen said he logged another throwing session Monday and expressed optimism about his chances of retaking the field Week 9. Allen also said he expects Carr to be on the practice field Wednesday. Spencer Rattler has been ineffective across his three consecutive appearances, culminating in him getting pulled early from New Orleans' 26-8 loss to the Chargers in Week 8 in favor of Jake Haener finishing out the contest. Getting Carr back under center would promise a notable boost for the Saints offense.

Saints' Derek Carr: Sitting out Sunday
Carr (oblique) is inactive for Sunday's game at the Chargers, John Hendrix of SI.com reports.
Carr has been tending to an oblique injury since a Week 5 loss at Kansas City, resulting in three straight absences. He hasn't practiced in the meantime, so his activity level in the coming days may be key for his odds to return to action next Sunday in Carolina. Spencer Rattler will continue to start under center for the Saints in Week 8.

Saints' Derek Carr: Taking doubtful tag into Sunday
Carr (oblique) is listed as doubtful for Sunday's game against the Chargers.
Carr was able to do some throwing earlier in the week, but he went down as a non-participant in practices Wednesday through Friday and is on track to miss a third straight game Sunday in Los Angeles. Though Spencer Rattler will pick up another start this weekend, head coach Dennis Allen has previously said that Carr is "very likely" to return to action Week 9 versus the Panthers, per Matthew Paras of The New Orleans Times-Picayune. Carr, however, will need to increase his practice activity during the upcoming week for a return to the lineup next Sunday in Carolina to become a reality.

Saints' Derek Carr: Idle for Thursday's practice
Carr (oblique) didn't participate in practice Thursday, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
Carr was able to resume throwing earlier this week, but with his left oblique strain continuing to keep him from taking part in practice drills, he's trending toward missing a third straight game Sunday against the Chargers. Rookie Spencer Rattler took reps with the first-team offense Thursday and looks on track to make another start in place of Carr.

Saints' Derek Carr: Unlikely to play Sunday
Head coach Dennis Allen said Wednesday that Carr (oblique) is unlikely to be available Sunday at the Chargers, with Spencer Rattler (hip) expected to make a third straight start at quarterback, Mike Triplett of NewOrleans.Football reports.
Carr has missed the last two games due to an oblique injury, but he was able to take part in throwing sessions Monday and Tuesday, which were intended to determine where he stood in his recovery. He appears to have not made enough progress, leaving Rattler and Jake Haener as the options under center Week 8. Rattler is dealing with a hip issue at the moment, but he looks like he'll be able to play through that injury this weekend.

Saints' Derek Carr: Completes throwing session
Head coach Dennis Allen said Carr (oblique) took part in a throwing session Monday and will throw again Tuesday before the Saints assess his status for Sunday's game against the Chargers, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com reports.
While Carr hasn't been ruled out for Sunday after missing the last two games with a left oblique strain, Allen admitted this past Friday that he was more confident the quarterback would be available for a Week 9 matchup with the Panthers. The Saints will see how Carr responds to throwing on consecutive days before potentially clearing him for some practice this week. If he doesn't make enough progress in his recovery to play Sunday, Allen said that he plans to have rookie Spencer Rattler make a third straight start.
