Davante Adams is gone, but the Packers are bringing back one of Aaron Rodgers' targets for the 2022 season. The team is re-signing tight end Robert Tonyan to a one-year, $3.5 million deal that with incentives can reach up to $5.5 million, according to NFL Media.
The 27-year-old Tonyan is hoping to bounce back after a torn ACL prematurely ended his 2021 season after eight games. Tonyan was coming off of a 2020 season that saw him set career-highs with 52 receptions for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. Tonyan's success that season helped Rodgers throw a career-high 48 touchdown passes en route to his first of consecutive MVP awards.
A former undrafted rookie, Tonyan has been with the Packers since 2017 after breaking into the NFL with the Lions. The 6-foot-5, 237-pound Tonyan played collegiately at Indiana State, where he set several school records including career touchdown receptions (20) and consecutive games with a reception (21).
The Packers are surely looking to bolster their receiving corps after losing Adams, who was traded to the Raiders in exchange for first and second-round picks in next month's NFL Draft. Along with the draft, the Packers still have several options in free agency that include veteran receivers Julio Jones, Jarvis Landry, T.Y. Hilton, Odell Beckham Jr. and Antonio Brown, among others.
Green Bay's current receiving corps includes Tonyan and fellow tight end Mercedes Lewis along with receivers Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb, and Amari Rodgers. Marquez Valdes-Scantling, a receiver who has been with the Packers since 2018, is currently a free agent.
