George R.R. Martin loves his jets. (Twitter)

George R.R. Martin, the author of the A Song of Ice and Fire books on which the HBO hit Game of Thrones is based, is supposedly so hard at work writing the latest installment – The Winds of Winter – that he's taking the season off from writing his annual episode once again. That, however, did not stop him from showing up at New York Jets training camp on Wednesday.

Martin's appearance gives us a great opportunity to compare Jets players to characters on the series, which is fun because it's August and the season is still weeks and weeks away.

WARNING: Heavy spoilers for Game of Thrones through the end of Season 5 below

Eric Decker is Jaime Lannister

(USATSI/Game of Thrones Wiki)

Decker began his career with the Denver Broncos where, once Peyton Manning came around, he was part of the best passing game in the NFL. Manning throwing to Decker, Demaryius Thomas, Wes Welker and Julius Thomas was nearly impossible to stop. Now he's on the Jets. Jamie, of course, was the best swordsman in all of Westeros until he had his hand cut off.

They're also both objectively handsome people, which helps the comparison.

Rex Ryan is Tywin Lannister

The former leader of the land who is, well... gone.

Brandon Marshall is Oberyn Martell

Swashbuckling warriors who, let's be honest, while supremely entertaining, probably won't last more than one season. (Marshall can be cut next offseason with no dead money if he doesn't live up to his $9 million salary.)

Todd Bowles is Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons.

Yes, that name is a mouthful. The point is that Bowles is in charge here, and making him Khaleesi allows me to make my this next comparison of old men wandering the wilderness.

Chan Gailey is Jorah Mormont

(USATSI/Game of Thrones Wiki)

Ser Jorah, of course, was forced to wander the wilderness in obscurity for much of Season 5 before eventually returning to Daenerys' side. Chan Gailey didn't spy on Todd Bowles at any point in their lives – at least I don't think he did – but he did wander the wilderness for a while (he hasn't coached since being fired by the Bills in 2012) before returning to become the Jets' offensive coordinator.

Darrelle Revis is Drogon

Drogon is one of Daenerys' dragons. The biggest, baddest dragon. He's the single biggest reason that if Daenerys ever decides she actually wants to cross the Narrow Sea and take over King's Landing, she will probably succeed.

Yeah, that sounds like Darrelle Revis.

Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine are those two other dragons that aren't Drogon

Daenerys has two other dragons. I honestly don't remember their names because they aren't as cool or as good as Drogon. Cromartie and Skrine are a little more well-known than that, but they're still not nearly as cool or as good as Revis. Neither one of them has an island named after them, at least.

Ryan Fitzpatrick is Tormund Giantsbane

(USATSI/Game of Thrones Wiki)

BEARDS!

D'Brickashaw Ferguson is Samwell Tarly

Sam is the big guy who's friends with Jon Snow and while he seems cuddly and nice, was actually the first person in recent memory to kill a Whitewalker. Ferguson is a big guy who, will nice and friendly, will absolutely demolish defensive linemen when he gets his hands on them.

Nick Mangold is Jon Snow

(USATSI/Game of Thrones Wiki)

Mangold's hair is blonde, sure, but this works because even though he's older and you might expect him to be done soon, he's under contract for two more seasons, just like Kit Harington, the actor who plays Jon Snow.
