Brandon Scherff to sign with Jaguars: Former Washington Pro Bowl guard headed to Jacksonville, per report

Scherff will serve as Trevor Lawrence's new star protector

The Jacksonville Jaguars are adding more protection for former No. 1 overall pick Trevor Lawrence, as former Washington Commanders right guard Brandon Scherff intends to sign with the franchise, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. The details of the agreed-upon deal have yet to be reported. 

Scherff has made five Pro Bowls in seven seasons with Washington, and has been the most consistent player for a franchise that has experienced so much change over the past few years. Washington worked for quite some time to sign Scherff to a long-term deal, but one never came to fruition. The 2020 first-team All-Pro played the last two years on the franchise tag, but now finally has some security.

Scherff was originally drafted by Washington with the No. 5 overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft out of Iowa. He immediately stepped in as a starter and didn't miss a game in his first two seasons. While Scherff has missed at least three games in each of the last four years, the 30-year-old still picked up Pro Bowl honors over the last three campaigns. 

The Jaguars have clearly put thought into how they want to address their offensive line this offseason, as they placed the franchise tag on left tackle Cam Robinson for the second straight year and have now reportedly landed one of the best interior players in this free agency class. The Jaguars also hold the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, and one has to wonder how these recent moves could affect how they use it.
