Tyler Bass drills the 25-yard FG -- and the Bills are going to the playoffs. The AFC East is next.
Bills vs. Dolphins score, takeaways: Josh Allen leads Buffalo to comeback victory, another playoff berth
Allen led the Bills to victory in a snow-covered thriller
On a night where the Buffalo Bills needed Josh Allen to deliver an MVP-caliber performance, Allen gave Buffalo one of his best games of his career -- in weather conditions that make a quarterback the stuff of legend. Allen led the Bills on a 86-yard drive with 5:56 to play that resulted in a game-winning Tyler Bass field goal with no time left on the clock to give the Bills a thrilling 32-29 victory over the Miami Dolphins on a snowy, frigid Saturday night in Orchard Park.
Allen, who finished with four passing touchdowns on the night, went 4 of 5 for 40 yards on the final drive to lead the Bills to victory. The Bills quarterback also threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Dawson Knox in the fourth quarter to make the score 29-27 then just broke the plane on the conversion attempt to tie the game at 29-29 with 9:02 left.
Allen finished 25 of 40 for 304 yards and four touchdowns in the win, all in freeing temperatures as Buffalo clinched a playoff berth for the fourth consecutive year. The victory pulls Buffalo within one win of the AFC East title and a guaranteed home game in the playoffs. Allen also rushed for 77 yards.
The Dolphins gave the Bills all they could handle, as Tua Tagovailoa finished 17 of 30 for 234 yards and two touchdowns in the loss. Miami took the lead in the third quarter on a Tagovailoa pass to Tyreek Hill to put the Dolphins up 26-21 with 2:30 remaining. Hill finished with nine catches for 69 yards and a touchdown in the contest and Raheem Mostert rushed for 136 yards. The Dolphins fall three games behind the Bills in the AFC East race and are a half game up on the final playoff spot in the AFC.
Here's a breakdown of what transpired on a snowy night in Buffalo.
Why the Bills won
Give it up to Josh Allen, who showed up when it mattered most in the fourth quarter. Allen was brilliant all game with his four touchdown passes, but he went 5 of 7 for 45 yards in the fourth quarter while running five times for 47 yards -- and converting a two-point conversion to tie the game at 29-29 with 9:02 to play.
Allen went 4 of 5 for 40 yards on the final drive to boot, finishing his night with 304 passing yards and 77 rushing yards. Allen had his third game with 300 passing yards and 75 rushing yards, tying Michael Vick and Russell Wilson for the most such performances in NFL history.
Why the Dolphins lost
The Dolphins just couldn't keep up with the Bills in the track meet when the snow was coming down. Buffalo run 22 plays on their final two possessions and gained 161 yards (scoring 11 points) while Miami ran 10 plays for 50 yards and scored three points.
The Dolphins defense just couldn't get a stop and get off the field, a recurring problem for Miami all year. Tua Tagovailoa can't be blamed for this loss, as he finished 17 of 30 for 234 yards with two touchdowns and a 104.0 passer rating.
Turning point
On a first-and-10 from the Bills' own 43-yard line, Josh Allen called his own number and took off for 44 yards -- going out of bounds at the Dolphins' 13-yard line right before the snow came down.
Allen had his longest run of the game and followed up that play with a 5-yard run that drew an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for a late hit out of bounds. The Bills scored three plays later on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Allen to Dawson Knox to set Allen up for his two-point conversion run that tied the game at 29-29.
While Allen's arm stole the show, his legs provided some key plays in this one as well.
Play of the game
Allen's touchdown pass to James Cook with no time remaining in the first half catapulted the Bills, which arguably ended up being the difference late in the game. Instead of taking three points before the half and throwing the ball away, Allen's gamble to buy time and throw to the end zone paid off.
Allen rolled to his right after spending too much time in the pocket, appearing to make a terrible decision. He bought enough time to direct Cook and threw a rope to the running back in the end zone for a touchdown with no time remaining in the half that put the Bills up 21-13.
Without that touchdown, the Bills probably lose the game. That touchdown throw can't be overlooked.
The quote
"This is nothing. I wish it was colder. I wish it was colder. I played in Wyoming for 3.5 years. This is my fifth year here. This is second nature now baby." -- Josh Allen on playing in the snow and cold in Buffalo to NFL Network after the game.
Allen is now 5-1 in his career in games with freeing temperatures, having 17 total touchdowns in those games.
Up next
The Bills (11-3) can clinch the AFC East with a win over the Chicago Bears (3-10) next Saturday while the Dolphins face the Green Bay Packers (5-8) on Christmas Day.
Bills players clearing the field for the chip shot FG -- and the win. Here we go.
Isaiah McKenzie draws the PI and this will be a chip shot for Tyler Bass for the win.
Since the snow started coming down, it's been all Bills.
Bills are just gonna let this thing run down and set up Tyler Bass for the win. Only way Dolphins are getting the ball is if he misses the GW FG attempt.
Just let Josh Allen sling it and win the game at this rate. 2nd-and-17 and gets the first down two plays later. Ball can't come out of Allen's hands.
In case you're wondering, the snow is coming down hard. Even the turf is slippery now.
Josh Allen broke the plane. Patrick Mahomes broke the plane a few weeks ago. Stand corrected. NFL got it right.
Josh Allen didn't get the ball past the plane -- we think. Patrick Mahomes got credit for a similar play a few weeks back. Ruled no conversion, but we'll see.
And Allen finds Dawson Knox for the TD -- his fourth TD pass tonight. Bills going for 2 here.
Josh Allen now has 11 games with 250+ pass yards and 50+ rush yards -- 3rd-most in NFL history. Only Cam Newton (13) and Russell Wilson (12) have more.
Want to know why Josh Allen runs as much as he does? Those last two carries. Just can't stop him and the Bills are in business in the red zone. A fight just broke out after that late hit.
Taron Johnson holds the Dolphins to 3 point with another huge play on 3rd down. Dolphins up 29-21 on the road in the fourth. let's see what Josh Allen can do here with this offense.
Jaelan Phillips strip sack on the first play at the 50. Another mistake by the Bills. These things just can't happen.
Going 3-and-out and giving Josh Allen the ball at the 50 is probably not a good idea.
The Isaiah Mckenzie play didn't matter at the end of the day.
Josh Allen overthrew an open Stefon Diggs by a few yards that would have been the go-ahead TD.
Feels like the Bills are making the little mistakes again. The ones that lose football games when they add up.
That's a catch by Isaiah Mckenzie, but officials didn't have enough evidence to overturn it I guess. I don't get why they have replay in the first place.
Don't look now.
Tua Tagovailoa is 11-of-22 for 195 yards with 2 TD, 0 INT, 111.0 rating.
Dolphins lead with 2:30 to go in 3Q. 4th straight game with TD catch for Tyreek Hill.
That Cam lewis roughing the kicker penalty is brutal. Mistake that can't be made in a game of this magnitude.
Feels like the chess match is starting with these defenses right now. Sacks by Buffalo and pressures by Miami on those last two drives. These teams have to get the run game going.
The Bills have allowed two 60+ yard plays tonight. As well as Josh Allen is playing, that's why this game is close.
Jaylen Waddle doing the penguin celebration after that 67-yard TD catch.
Waddle was WIDE OPEN.
I mean, you can't stop this.
Josh Allen is 16-of-23 for 217 yards with 3 TD, 0 INT, and a 138.9 passer rating in the first half -- in freezing temperatures.
This is why the Bills MUST get home-field advantage in the AFC playoffs.
Josh Allen is up to over 200 yards passing in the first half. He's having a night so far.
The Dolphins have 14 carries for 125 yards so far.
8.9 yards per carry. It's 14-13 now after that Salvon Ahmed TD run.
The game has been stopped because of the snowballs being thrown from the stands. I don't think that's gonna stop Buffalo Bills fans. They are in a festive mood.
Josh Allen is 11-of-14 for 166 yards and 2 TD passes with 0 INT tonight (155.7 rating).
Tua Tagovailoa 4-of-10, 44 yards, 53.8 rating.
8:18 to go in 2nd quarter.
Bills fans threw snow in the end zone right at Tyreek Hill when Tua Tagovailoa threw that incomplete pass his way.
Home-field advantage.
Raheem Mostert has 121 yards from scrimmage in the 1st quarter. 7 carries, 101 yards; 1 catch, 20 yards.
Josh Allen just went 3-for-3 for 72 yards and a TD in just 1:15. In freezing temperatures.
The man is good.
