Week 6 of NFL action brought some insanity, as well as the realization that no one knows anything. Also: if you can tell me who the best team in the NFL is, I've got a million people who will agree with you, and another five million who will disagree.
It's great for the game and it's going to make for a fun season. We haven't seen to much of a change up top since we last checked on our NFL Super Bowl Odds, but we did a serious separation occur this week.
Look at the line after the Broncos (12/1). Well, the imaginary line anyway -- after Denver things go off a cliff, with the Eagles (35/1) showing up next on the list. That's a clear-cut signal that there are a small group of teams bettors are throwing cash on, and the rest of the league is confusing.
Has anyone been more overrated than the Saints? They go on bye, come back at 1-4 and they're 40/1? Seriously?
And does anyone fluctuate more than the Redskins (75/1)? I feel like every single week we're breaking down why they're sinking like a stone or rising like, um, whatever is much less heavy than a stone. This week it was a direct result of Robert Griffin III busting out a 76-yard touchdown run to beat the Vikings. It makes them popular and it makes them scary.
Speaking of stones sinking, the Cardinals (75/1) bandwagon is getting pretty empty pretty quickly. That's what happens when the top two guys on your running back depth chart go down and your quarterback has ribs poking through his stomach. That offensive line is a trainwreck.
In fact, Miami (75/1) evened up with Arizona and, to me, they're a much more interesting team to gamble long on. Are they winning the Super Bowl? Nah, not realistically. But you're getting close to midway through the season and you can get 75/1 odds -- what if they trade for Dwayne Bowe??? The AFC is so weak this year.
The 49ers (6/1) dropped only a tiny bit this week, which is nuts, considering how badly they got beat by the Giants -- at home, no less -- during Week 6. It's safe to assume that Vegas has some liability hanging out there on San Francisco already, and you won't see them dip below 10/1 unless they're actually eliminated from the playoffs.
Pittsburgh, San Diego and Philadelphia -- all 35/1 -- are annoying inconsistent teams and I don't think they'll win the Super Bowl, per se, but considering how reasonably close all are to the playoffs and/or the division lead, none of them are necessarily terrible bets right now.
Onto the Super Bowl picks this week:
Will Brinson: Texans vs. Falcons -- I feel much less braggadocios about my preseason Super Bowl pick this week than I did last week. That's what happens when the Falcons squeak out their third-straight win against an inferior opponent and the Texans get spanked at home. No biggie though. Both these teams are going to the playoffs. Lock that down. Now they just need to get hot going into the postseason.
Pete Prisco: Patriots vs. Packers -- I know. The Patriots lost and the Packers are not atop the division. But the Packers looked great against Houston, and the Patriots will get it going.
Clark Judge: Texans vs. Packers -- I'm not going to panic just because the Packers are 3-3. They had a big win last weekend, and it was against the Texans. So they may have awakened. Anyway, they have too much talent to go away. And I'll stick with Houston until someone else in the AFC has a pulse.
