He's the type of player one would expect to emerge from the Spurs system. A fascinating story, Simmons had to pay $150 to try out for the D-League. Soon after he emerged as San Antonio's latest out-of-nowhere player to turn into a productive rotation piece.
Now, Simmons is cashing in on his story in a new location. Originally a restricted free agent, San Antonio allowed Simmons to become unrestricted and he used that opportunity to find a better deal with the Magic.
Simmons was expected to receive stronger offers in restricted free agency, but teams didn't pursue him until the Spurs pulled his qualifying offer.
