Pelicans/76ers (1st/2nd Rnds - 6th, 42nd picks overall)
- Pelicans get Jrue Holiday, 42nd pick
- 76ers get Nerlens Noel's draft rights, slightly protected 2014 1st
As big of a surprise that Nerlens Noel would fall to the sixth pick in this draft, it's an even bigger surprise that the Philadelphia 76ers would deal Jrue Holiday after his first All-Star season and a four-year, $41 million extension that kicks in for the 2013-14 season. This solves a huge issue at point guard for the Hornets, who got a nice season from Greivis Vasquez in 2012-13 but needed someone who can play better defense.
For the Sixers, they either plan to use Noel next to Andrew Bynum if they can re-sign the center who didn't play a single second for Philadelphia last season or they have a contingency plan in case they decide Bynum isn't worth the trouble moving forward. The 2014 first-round pick for Philadelphia is reportedly protected for the Top 3 picks.
Timberwolves/Jazz (1st Rnd - 9th, 14th, 21st picks overall)
- Timberwolves get draft rights to Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng
- Jazz get Trey Burke's draft rights
After a flood of David Kahn jokes immediately after the Minnesota Timberwolves selected point guard Trey Burke with the ninth pick, the Wolves quickly turned around and traded him to the Utah Jazz for two more picks in the first round of this draft. The Wolves were high on Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who was selected with the eighth pick by the Detroit Pistons, but once he was off the board, Flip Saunders started dealing.
This is a great move for the Jazz, who needed a point guard on their roster and finally have a replacement for Deron Williams, who was traded a couple of seasons ago. First part of this trade for Minnesota is drafting Shabazz Muhammad at 14. He's a scorer, which they need, but he'll have to prove he can hit the 3-pointer and develop a right hand. They also pick up Gorgui Dieng out of Louisville. Dieng is a big time defensive prospect at center and could give them insurance if Nikola Pekovic leaves in free agency.
Celtics/Mavericks (1st Rnd - 13th, 16th picks overall)
- Celtics get Kelly Olynyk's draft rights
- Mavericks get 16th pick and two future second rounders
Boston Celtics are looking to fill out their frontcourt, either in the starting lineup or the bench, with a scorer like Olynyk who is able to play both inside and outside. His footwork when driving into the lane is great and can be a Carl Landry type of scorer off the bench for the Celtics, if that's where they choose to use him in the rotation.
Mavericks/Hawks (1st/2nd Rnds - 16th, 18th, 44th picks overall)
- Mavericks get Shane Larkin's draft rights
- Hawks get Jared Cuningham and draft rights to Lucas Nogueira and Mike Muscala
The Dallas Mavericks will give up on their chances of stashing a player in Europe and take point guard Shane Larkin to provide some much-needed depth at point guard. Darren Collison was a disappointment in his first year with the Mavericks, and the team eventually ended up starting Mike James at different times. Larkin could have a chance to play right away.
For the Hawks, they move up and grab Lucas Nogueira out of Brazil. Nogueira is a guy they can either stash overseas or bring over and develop behind Al Horford to create an incredibly deep defensive front line. They grabbed another good big man project in Bucknell's Mike Muscala, the 44th pick in the draft. He had been projected as high as the late first round. Picking up Jared Cunningham gives them a prospect to develop at point guard now that Devin Harris is a free agent. Cunningham was the 24th pick in the 2012 draft.
The Mavericks flipped the 16th pick to the Atlanta Hawks for the 18th pick, where they selected Shane Larkin. The two future second round picks are unspecified at this time.
Nuggets/Jazz (1st/2nd Rnds - 27th, 46th picks overall)
- Nuggets get Erick Green's draft rights and cash
- Jazz get Rudy Gobert's draft rights
The Utah Jazz cap off their first round trading with French center Rudy Gobert to join rookie Trey Burke. The Jazz have a crowded frontcourt already with Al Jefferson, Paul Millsap, Derrick Favors, and Enes Kanter, but Jefferson and Millsap are free agents this summer. If Utah loses them both, Gobert will join a young but developing frontcourt in Utah and have plenty of time to develop if he comes over right away.
For the Nuggets, they continue to cut costs this summer. After not matching a big deal for Executive of the Year Masai Ujiri and then firing Coach of the Year George Karl instead of giving him a contract extension, they avoid paying a first round contract this season. Erick Green is one of the top scorers in this draft class and can add some depth to the Nuggets' backcourt.
Warriors/Thunder (1st Rnd - 26th, 29th picks overall)
- Warriors get Archie Goodwin's draft rights and cash
- Thunder get Andre Roberson's draft rights
The Warriors kept flipping first round picks once they found their way into the first round. They moved Roberson's rights to the Thunder for Goodwin's rights. Then flipped Goodwin to the Phoenix Suns. For the Thunder, Roberson is depth on the wing and one of the top rebounding forwards in the draft. He could allow the Thunder to continue to go small with Kevin Durant at the 4 if they end up playing in the same lineups.
Warriors/Timberwolves (1st Rnd - 26th pick overall)
- Warriors get Andre Roberson's draft rights and Malcolm Lee
- Timberwolves get 2014 second round pick and cash
The Golden State Warriors were hoping to get into the first round of this draft and that's exactly what they did. Once the Wolves turned the ninth pick into two first round picks, they were willing to part with the 26th pick in the first round for future considerations. The Warriors used the 26th pick to flip it to the Oklahoma City Thunder for the 29th pick.
By including Lee in the deal, they carve out a little more cap space for this summer when they have Nikola Pekovic, Chase Budinger, and possibly Andrei Kirilenko as free agents. It's not an ideal way to use a first round pick, but value was apparently low in this draft class at 26 in their eyes, and the cap savings were important to them.
Warriors/Suns (1st Rnd - 29th, 30th picks overall)
- Warriors get Nemanja Nedovic's draft rights
- Suns get Archie Goodwin's draft rights and Malcolm Lee
The last of the Warriors' pick flipping landed them Nemanja Nedovic, who is apparently known as the Serbian Derrick Rose. Whether that's true or not, Golden State ended up with a fascinating overseas project who could come over and add instant firepower to a backcourt that is already brimming with scoring.
For the Suns, being able to nab Archie Goodwin at the end of the first round is a nice victory for them. He can play either guard position for them and develop without any pressure of playing winning basketball. The addition of Malcolm Lee gives them a defensive wing, but a guard without a true position.
Mavericks/Wizards/76ers/Bucks (2nd Rnd - 35th, 38th, 43rd, 54th picks overall)
- Mavericks get Ricky Ledo's draft rights
- Wizards get Glen Rice, Jr.'s draft rights
- 76ers get Arsalan Kazemi's draft rights
- Bucks get Nate Wolters' draft rights
I'm not quite sure how Ricky Ledo ended up in Dallas, but we know he went through Atlanta at some point. Those details will be revealed on Friday but we can comment on the rest. The Wizards picked up a first round talent in the second round of the draft with Glen Rice, Jr. and will be able to play him at both the 2 and the 3. Nate Wolters could be a nice backup for the Bucks right away depending on what happens with Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis this summer. The Sixers' pickup of Arsalan Kazemi is unlikely to make a dent in their roster.
With Ledo in Dallas, the Mavericks may have found an incredibly cheap way to make up for the scoring lost if O.J. Mayo signs somewhere else this summer. Ledo is a lottery talent with a first round projection due to ineligibility issues at Providence that ended up in the second round of the draft. He could end up being the steal of the draft.
Trail Blazers/Cavaliers (2nd Rnd - 31st pick overall)
- Trail Blazers get Allen Crabbe's draft rights
- Cavaliers get two future second-round picks
The Cavs apparently feel that they have enough young players on the roster and decided to move the first pick of the second-round to the Blazers. The Blazers get a very versatile wing player in Crabbe, who can shoot from downtown and defend both the 2 and the 3 positions.
Grizzlies/Nuggets (2nd Rnd - 55th pick overall)
- Grizzlies get Kosta Koufos
- Nuggets get Darrell Arthur and Joffrey Lauvergne's draft rights
The Denver Nuggets get rid of the center George Karl refused to play behind JaVale McGee. Now the Nuggets will get to feature McGee at center and see just how much of that contract he can earn. The pickup of Darrell Arthur in the process gives them some much-needed depth at the power forward position. For the Grizzlies, they pick up a valuable backup center to Marc Gasol.
Hawks/Heat (2nd Rnd - 50th pick overall)
- Heat get James Ennis' draft rights
- Hawks get future second-round pick
The Heat picked up a really nice project with James Ennis. He's a great athlete, can shoot the ball, and he gets to learn from the best in the league. He's a small forward that could really be molded into a nice reserve role for the Heat down the road.
Pacers/Celtics (2nd Rnd - 53rd pick overall)
- Celtics get Colton Iverson's draft rights
- Pacers get cash considerations
Celtics fans will now order custom "Iverson" jerseys, confuse the casual fans, and wait for Andrew Wiggins to come in 2014.
