As the three races that will decide who competes for the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series championship loom and narratives on each driver's season near completion, the Charlotte Motor Speedway serves as a central part of the narrative concerning Kyle Larson's pursuit of a second Cup championship. After all, Charlotte is the place where Larson's season could have been ruined entirely, and is now the place that could propel Larson forward to the finish line.
In May, Larson was set to become the latest driver to attempt the Indy-Charlotte Double and race in both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, but his ambitions were completely ruined by one rainstorm that delayed the start of the Indy 500, preventing him from getting to Charlotte for the start of the Coke 600, then kept him from ever getting in his car once he finally arrived to run the second half of NASCAR's longest race. Larson earned no points, went down in the record books as having not competed, and had to sweat out a waiver from NASCAR to maintain his playoff eligibility despite having missed a race.
Larson's return trip to Charlotte this past weekend, however, ended in Victory Lane with his second career win on the track's Roval configuration and his sixth win of the 2024 season. That gives him double the amount of wins that NASCAR's other winningest drivers have this season -- William Byron, Denny Hamlin, and Christopher Bell each have three apiece -- and it also puts Larson atop the the CBS Sports NASCAR Power Rankings as the Round of 8 gets set to begin in Las Vegas.
