The plans that NASCAR had to hold extended practice at the newly reprofiled Atlanta Motor Speedway were ruined by Mother Nature, as heavy rain forced all on-track activity stopped on Friday. In the interest of giving drivers and teams adequate time to learn the track, that's led to the cancellation of Saturday qualifying and the return of the qualifying algorithm used to determine the starting lineup so often in 2020 and 2021.
To compensate for the lost track time, NASCAR decided to cancel Saturday qualifying in favor of an extended practice session, leading to the starting lineup being set by the NASCAR rulebook. The starting order was determined by a metric accounting for each driver's finish and fastest lap last week at Phoenix as well as their points position.
As a result, Phoenix winner Chase Briscoe will start on the pole for the Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500, giving him the first unofficial pole of his Cup career.
