Jimmie Johnson has been cleared to return to competition and will start in NASCAR's Quaker State 400 on Sunday, Hendrick Motorsports announced on Wednesday. Johnson tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in June, but tested negative for the virus twice on Monday and Tuesday.
Johnson, who was cleared by his physician, never experienced any coronavirus symptoms. The veteran driver missed the first race of his career when he wasn't able to participate in the Big Machine Hand Sanitizer 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
"My family is so grateful for the incredible love and support we've received over the last several days," Johnson said. "I especially want to thank Justin Allgaier for stepping in for me at Indy and being a true pro. I'm excited about getting back to business with my team this weekend."
After Johnson tested positive for the coronavirus, four Hendrick Motorsports crew members were tested for COVID-19 and all of those came back negative. The driver was initially tested after his wife tested positive for coronavirus. It's expected that all of crew members of Johnson's team will be available for Sunday's race at Kentucky Speedway.
Hendrick Motorsports has instituted daily COVID-19 screenings at their facilities. The team is observing social distancing requirements and there is a high level of sanitization of all work areas.
Johnson, who drives the No. 48 car, currently sits in 15th in the Cup Series standings.
