Pepiot didn't factor into the decision in Friday's Opening Day win versus the Rockies. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out eight over six innings.
With Shane McClanahan (triceps) on the shelf, it was Pepiot who helped launch a new chapter in Rays history with their opener at George M. Steinbrenner Field, the Yankees' spring training facility that will be the Rays' home for 2025. Pepiot looked overpowering at times but was wild in the fourth inning. After hitting Michael Toglia with an errant curveball, the righty threw a wild pitch that advanced Toglia another 90 feet. He would eventually cross home plate on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Farmer. However, Tampa's offense came to life late and kept Pepiot out of the loss column. He is tentatively slated to face the Pirates his next time out.

Manager Kevin Cash announced Sunday that Pepiot will start Friday's season opener against the Rockies, Ryan Bass of FanDuel Sports Network Sun reports.
Shane McClanahan had previously been named Tampa Bay's Opening Day starter, but a triceps injury will put him on the injured list to begin the season. Pepiot is coming off his first full season as an MLB starter, and he pitched well in 26 starts with a 3.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 142:48 K:BB over 130 innings.

Pepiot made only his second spring start, though he's already stretched out to 72 pitches. He hasn't been particularly sharp in his pair of outings, allowing three earned runs across six innings while maintaining a 6:3 K:BB. The Rays have seven potential starters for their rotation, though Pepiot figures to be locked into a starting role throughout the campaign.

Pepiot ran into trouble in the third inning when an RBI double by Vaughn Grissom drove in the game's first run. An unfortunate throwing error by the Rays defense compounded the damage, allowing another run to score. Pepiot wasn't given much of a chance to recover, as he was pulled after throwing just 63 pitches in the regular-season finale. Acquired from the Dodgers in the Tyler Glasnow trade last winter, the 27-year-old Pepiot enjoyed a successful inaugural season for the Rays, pitching to a 3.60 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 142:48 K:BB in 130 innings (26 starts).

While Pepiot struggled with command a bit Tuesday, matching a season high with four walks, he managed to hold Detroit scoreless until Wenceel Perez's two-out, two-run double in the fifth inning. The 27-year-old right-hander has held opponents to two earned runs or fewer in 12 of his last 13 outings, posting a 2.71 ERA in that span (63 innings). Pepiot's ERA now sits at 3.64 through 126 innings this season with a 1.14 WHIP and 137:46 K:BB. He'll look to wrap up the campaign on a high note in his next and final outing, currently scheduled for this weekend in Boston.
